When I grew Little Dutch indoors, I used coconut coir with perlite as the substrate. I fed with "general" pH buffered hydroponics nutrients at ~1/2 dosage. However, I didn't start feeding until the plants started to grow quickly. That worked very well. My impression is seedlings are quite sensitive to "damping off" when over fed or over watered. I'd be weary about using compost or manure with indoor plants.

Im just using it as a seed starter bed. Like using those peat pellets that swell with water. The indoor plants will be in buckets of dirt with some compost mixed

I have to say I'm surprised that the compost has no analysis, not even in the detailed product specs. I've seen bagged compost N-P-K rated as 0.05-0.05-0.05, which is nice for improving soil tilth, but worthless as a fertilizer. Black Kow composted manure is rated at 0.5-0.5-0.5, which is useful as fertilizer.

Well I was saddened to see the N. Rustica I was sold does not seem to be.
Idk what it is but it doesn't have the characteristics and it doesn't grow as fast

The one leaf that I can see well looks like Rustica, but the newer leaves seem to have some kind of problem like Frenching or injury.
I agree with Frenching. That is caused by severe malnutrition, which can result from either the absence of specific nutrients in the soil (needs fertilizer) or a pH outside the range of about 5.8 to 6.4.

The frenching i noticed and added fertilizer to them. Ill do a ph test today or tomorrow.

Ph is between 7.0 and 7.5 so im adding acidifier.

Late season. Got about 10-15 plants in the garden then a monsoon hit. Pretty sure my little ones are gona be drowned out. I still have 200 to 250 in the house but I think after this I won't have any staghorn or Small Stalk Black Mammoth. Can't get Incekara to grow for anything.
Big Gem and Rustica seems to be good so far.

I was wrong. 1 of 7 Tomato, and the 3 zucchini got beat up. Lost the roof off my tin garden shed. But the 1 rustica I've been babying and kept alive for months lived. And the others that I covered with milk jugs and staked with flimsy tent stakes look good. Ill swear by milk jugs now tops were off during the stormtoo. Had lima bean sized hail, 70+ mph wind, torrential rain. Picture is Small Stalk Black Mammoth then Staghorn then rustica.

Rustica looks good 9" leaves on a couple.
This one was started in the house in a 5 gallon bucket. I decided to let it sucker wild because of the frenching we discussed it pretty much stopped growing on the main stem. I can use the extra leaves as filler anyway

Garden looks odd. Varying stages of growth. Many restarts. This year was a bad year for weather. I hope I can get enough crop out. Down to only 50 plants.

Still have 5 SSBM, 5 Staghorn, 2 Incekara, 1 One Sucker, 15 rustica, and maybe 20 big gem.
Harvested 2 rustica and that one i thought was rustica. Started in the house and it started frenching. It wasn't rustica. Not sure but doesn't matter. I left the rustica stalks and it started a new stalk. Im thinking this might be better than starting seeds.... another thought was if I let a sucker grow for awhile then put a root ball starter on it.....hmm new thoughts ya know..

Nicotiana tabacum is a perennial, so long as frost does not kill the root. Some years ago, I toyed with leaving seedlings in a 3" pot, and just keeping them there, indoors, through the summer and subsequent winter. The following spring, I moved them (still in their 3" pots) to my front porch for the growing season. Whenever they grew too tall and gangly, I snipped off the stalk, and allowed a sucker to replace it.
In their third growing season, they were transplanted to the garden bed, to see how they would perform. Some of them were working on their 5th stalk replacement. As you can see from the sample photos above, they did okay. The quality of the leaf was okay, but not great. Some of the 5 or so varieties that I tried in this testing simply showed the whites of their eyes, as soon as they were sent out on their own, and promptly died.
Bud Bags: cotton for bud bags works, though they become quite heavy when wet, and the seed production seems to be somewhat reduced because of greater heat retention. The older and more worn out the sheet, the better it will perform. If it's a polyester blend, then you won't have to worry about unsightly wrinkles.

As Bob pointed out a cotton sheet bud bag can be heavy when wet. Combine that with some wind and the top of the plant can whip around like the medieval ball and chain mace. Even the lightweight bud bags can whip around pretty good. Some of us use 5 gal. paint strainers from hardware, paint stores, or big box lumber suppliers. (Or Amazon, Ace, etc. online) You can see through them and know if you need to readjust your bag with reusable zip tie.
