Thanks 2 times to you guys. Ya'll are making it real hard to go out and actualy get any work done but its worth it to learn something beneficial that could increase future profits.

That's wild. They cover theirs in dirt instead of sawdust. I guess same principle. Seems like dirt would be tough on a saw blade if you didn't get it all out of the crevices. My new goal in life is to have Deluxestogie PM me for advice! Don't see that happening anytime soon though.

Aaron- what do you use for stain? Do pipes require some kind of food grade finish? What can burn and still be safe?

I use Fiebings leather dyes diluted with denatured alcohol. The inside of the bowl will stay natural wood so there won't be any flame touching. After staining and sanding through my range of grits: 220,320,400,600,800 I'll apply a spit coat of shellac and then buff with tripoli and white rouge. The final step will be a light buff with carnauba to give it a nice shine.

I know in pipemaking circles that Mimmo/Romeo Briar is the king of briar suppliers. I hope to place a 20 or 30 block order after the 1st of the year.

I went to Romeo website and saw his show pipes. Absolute works of art. I've made some rifle stocks but working with something as small as a pipe takes alot of skill and patience. Your pipe is really shaping up. You will have something to be proud of.

The pipe is starting to look like a pipe now. I have the mouthpiece cut down now and I think I'm finally getting close to final shape. Just a few more adjustments here and there then I can smooth the surfaces out. :)

Would any of the following make a decent pipe? I have some good size scraps. Curly Maple, Fiddleback Walnut, Burl Walnut, Rosewood. Thanks.

I know Rosewood pipes are common and I would imagine the Burl Walnut would probably be fine too. The Curly Maple and the Fiddleback Walnut I have no Idea really how tough they are.

Well, looks like I finally got this one completed. I'm pretty happy with the way this one turned out.

And so you should be. It looks great! Nice job. As an aside -- I just scored some cherry burls and branch Y's. You interested in cherry? If so let me know and we'll try to zero in on what you'd like. These are green (my G'sons are earning a buck cleaning up Sandy damage). Oh yeah I got some nice straight grain out of that too. -- John

That is a nice looking pipe Aaron, and I like how you have the grain.
How many hours you think you have in it?

Aaron-- give yourself a big pat on the back, I can't reach it. I know you must be proud, it's gorgeous. Just watch the door jams trying to get the big head through. Jolly good show old chap.

johnlee--my cousin that owns a sawmill said his buddy that turns bowls buries his green stuff in sawdust to cure and they never crack. He was supposed to find out how long to bury them so I can tell BarG. When I hear from him I'll shoot a PM at you too. Do you happen to know anything about that Aaron?

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. John, I'll pass for now on the cherry. Thanks for offering! Mark, I would guess I probably had a good 40 hours in this one. AK, I had not heard of that yet but that's great to know. I always like being able to use something that might otherwise go to waste. :)

I'm pretty happy with it too, since my inbox just had a note from Aaron saying it's mine!

An absolutely beautiful piece of work.

It's gorgeous,I love the blonde wood vs the normal dark colors. Will it stay light like that or does it naturally darken with use?
