Most of my tobacco bloomed 10 days ago and I just cut down a lot of it. To be exact, BSS-Maden, Lebonese, Xanthi Yaka, Little Dutch and tomorrow I'll be harvesting the Big Gem, Monte Calm Brun and Yellow as well as the Yellow Pryor. I usually do not start harvesting until at lest 3 weeks after first bloom. The criteria I use is looking for an ever so slight change in the leaf. I also look under a lower leaf and if the stem has that alligator look to it AND it snaps like celery then I harvest. Almost all of my tobacco has met that criteria. I'm thinking maybe the extreme, prolonged excessive heat "sped" thing up? I'll also begin priming my cigar leaf in a few days (Fl Sumatra and Vuelto Abajo). Comments? Esteemed insight? Wild Hillbilly guesses????

I believe I am a little earlier this year also. The lower leaves of my MCY and Comstock have started to color so I am priming them The CT broad leaf and shade are still growing and haven't set buds yet so I think they are about on schedule. In fairness this is my first year with YTB, MCY, and Comstock so I really have no benchmark.

I finally found a big enough box so your shade will go out tomorrow. Sorry about the delay. (No, they ain't bananas. ;) )

Yes, I am about a week earlier than the last 2 years, and I too think it's the extremes in heat.

Only the upper most leaves of the Virginia Gold are still on the stalk;all the lower leaves of Virginia BrightLleaf have been picked, and all but the very top leaf of the Havana 142 has been picked. All these leaves are essentually ripe now, just don't have room yet to cure them.

The Keller Maryland is not yet ripening, but I expect it will be primed within 2 weeks.

Some of mine has been cut and on the second growth spurt, while others like silk leaf and silver river still has yet to put on buds.

Geez can't wait to start harvesting, mine are about 8" now but looking really good already. Another month and I might be grabbing lugs, can't wait :)

Sounds like a lot of happy farmers for the most part this year too!

Randy ,Keep an update on your Fl. Sumatra harvest . I have just started topping on mine and chosen 1 plant to bag.and have no clue as to when is the best time. I have been priming mudlugs on most of my earliest plantings and some middles on some Havana 41 and silk leaf. I have cut a couple silk leafs for top stalk harvest. Today I primed the mud lugs on my havana 425 which Iv'e started topping also and ready to bag 1 plant. I think the burly and maryland 609 are getting close to stalk harvest as well as my virginia gold, and perique.
I have been hesitant to prime above the mud lugs considering the change in weather and growth of plants with showers everyafternoon.

I wish you would post a pic of your silver rivers, I have some also but have nothing to compare to. Mine are doing better with the rains and aren't budding yet but I have a feeling yours are doing better.
