Yep, I already got the Perlite and Vermiculite is on back order. I'm going to mix in some peat moss to lighten it some and cotton seed meal for continuous nitrogen feeding thru the year.

Thanks,

John

how did you add your cottonseed meal johnnlee1933 ,was it to transplant seedlings or when setting.

After I get my soil test back I add thefer tilizer recommended and add the cottonseed meal. I have forgotten the lbs/acre but I have it written down somewhere. After that I add no nothing for the rest of the season.I know I am paying too much for the meal but my plots are so small it really isn't much. It would cost more to go out to supper. (And I cook too well for much of that.)

Kids and grandkids are priceless. So here I am keeping freezers and pantrys full and growing my own smoke. Life is good. I know better than to try and make my own beer.

I even did that. I don't like it myself but when my son was in his beer drinkin' days I made it for him and his buddies (good stuff, about 10%). I knew I couldn't stop em so I set it up so I could watch em. A hat was on the piano and they would put their keys in it. If I saw a fellow tying on a packet I'd make his keys disappear and call his folks saying he was going to sleep over that night. The next mornings were the most fun. I'd cook up pancakes, eggs bacon sausage grits whatever and watch them turn green. ;<)) The rules were clear. If you puked you got to clean it up. No kid in that bunch ever got into a car accident on my watch. Today that same son is worrying about his boys. One is in college on a baseball scholarship, pitching. He travels quite a lot with the team and my kid is pulling his own hair out. I tell him "pay back is a bitch. And today I probably get arrested for "contributing to delinquency " or something.

The other day I was in the grocery when when somebody behind me took off my cap. I turned looking for who to shoot and saw this man full growed with my cap and his keys in it. He said "Hi Mr. Ashworth. Remember me? He now has a family, both girls. I smiled gently and said "Ah-Ha, Other worries." He said "NO, the same and more." I gave him the pay back line and my best wishes.

John,
You could just drill small holes in the bottom, then add a layer of coarse rocks or gravel below the soil. They should work well for a single plant.

Bob

I read on a gardening site that the experts no longer reccomend large fill at the bottom of the containers due to the added material stopping the cappilary action downwards and that they actually raise the PWT in the container [ perched water table] It would be better to add small wick to pot to speed water's trip to bottom. This acts to trick the soil into thinking the bottom of the container is deeper than it is and drains better somehow. Adding the drain tile or rocks gravel do help fill the container which I would think in this case would be good thing.

That's an excellent discussion of water movement in potted soil. Thank you for posting the link. [Most of the extremely long page consists of a gazillion replies to the article, and can be ignored.]

I recommend reading the primary article to anyone who grows anything in a pot.
