Dump 1/2 carton of salt in a large pot fill 1/2 full water. Add 2 bags of raw peanuts then add 2-4 teaspoons Cayenne pepper. Boil all day till peanuts are slimmy in side. Great with beer. You can deep fry the boiled nuts after they are done as well. The shell is then a snack as well.
Sounds dumb- But they are great.

I love boiled peanuts. You used to see folks on the side of the road selling them. My buddies get together on occasions for peanut boiling.

Another good snack is parched and salted dry corn kernels.

i love me some peaunuts,,, i grew them one year [ virginia jumbo's ] but they take up too much valuable garden space...

I wonder if Chickens tire method of growing potatoes would work with peanuts? Or the straw pile method? Anybody try that with peanuts?

Plenty of boiled goobers around here as well. All of the country stores have them as well as roadside stands. It does take a good amount of land to grow, but they are worth the trouble for a main food group.

I don't think so. Due to the way they grow. Peanuts are from the flowers, not the roots. After pollination each flower grows a small shoot down into the soil surface, at the end of which a peanut forms.

I love the Cajun style! Spicy hot. I still see stands here and there. You can find them inside more gas stations now. But there's nothing like the ones at the stands.

I'm with you. I love me some boiled goobers. When I was a little boy my grandmother would rock me on the front porch and we would eat boiled peanuts she boiled. Man that brings back a lot of sweet memories.

I like the Cajun style boiled peanuts. Here is a recipe I use. So, the best way to cook boiled peanuts is to use a Crockpot. Secondly, make sure to use raw peanuts opposed to roasted ones. Raw peanuts sometimes are also called “green” peanuts because of their raw state.[h=3]Prep Time: 10 minutes[/h][h=3]Cook Time: 8 hours[/h][h=3]Total Time: 8 hours, 10 minutes[/h][h=3]Yield: 6 to 8 servings[/h][h=3]Ingredients:[/h]
  • 10 cups raw peanuts, washed
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasonings (like Tony Chachere’s)
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt
  • Water, as needed
[h=3]Preparation:[/h]1. Into a Crockpot, add raw peanuts, Cajun spice and salt. Add enough water to cover the peanuts. Turn Crockpot on to high and cook, covered, until peanuts are soft, about 8 to 10 hours.

The peanut takes as much space as a large tobacco plant. As DGBAMA said- After the flower has went to bud, it puts on a runner like the air plane plant . And travels to the soil below and the nut grows under the top soil like a root. It takes alot of sand for it to grow. I just buy them and boil em. Save the space for baccy. Try em DEEP FRIED, They are great as well.

Made some goobers today at work. A big hit. It's good teaching aussies how to enjoy themselves. Made a pretty large batch of 10lbs with some ghost chilli in the water, some star anise, cinnamon, maundering and orange, prawn paste, garlic, ginger and tumeric, a few leek heads as well. Some good tasting goobers.

came out tasting like a nice mild XO sauced nut an Asian influence. It may be bastardisation of an American staple but they disappeared as quick as they cooled.

they were very saucy and one of the girls ate the skins/pods as well, must have been ok.
