Hello I am new to this but I can't find anything about Kentucky seeds, I mean about where to get them. I am learning a lot in one day from this forum (it's great, what a wealth of information). I understand now that Dark Kentucky is Kentucky tobacco dried over a fire.

What I can't find is how to get a hold of Kentucky seeds (is there such a thing as Kentucky specific or is it something general)?

I would like to get the same blend as Drum tobacco (Dark Kentucky and Bright Virginia).

There is Dark Air cured and Dark Fire cured. You can buy whole leaf tobacco now to try to find the blend you like and then you can get the seeds to grow some. Look at the tobacco for sale at www.WholeLeafTobacco.com. This is FmGrowit's website, he is the founder of this forum. He sells the flue cured Virginia and the Dark air cured Kentucky.

I think we are mixing curing methods and varieties here. There could be some terminology difference between USA and UK. There is Dark Air Cured and Dark Fire Cured. This can apply to many varieties that are cured in that manner. You can readily tell the difference by the smoky smell of the fire cured.

The only varieties I know of with Kentucky in their names are Burleys, which are not considered dark...I don't believe. Hope this helps.

Hey thank you for the information you all. And thank you for the pdf file. I will read it tonight. I will also check the forum about how to treat the leaves. But first of course how to plant and grow it, hahaha.

On the Drum packet it says "Dark Kentucky and Bright Virginia" > it also says "no Burley and no Oriental"

Just a basic question: VA is that Virginia and KY is that Kentuky?

Yes, that's right. Remember there are many strains of each. -- John

Think of tobacco as cheese. You don't just have cheese, you have mozerella, Cheddar etc and each of those types have many sub types. Same thing as tobacco. The problem in mixing comes not so much from the varieties but the processes and flavorings

This is 100% correct. Drum has a really strong smell of firecured to it.

Your favorite quote of the day sounds just like JBD. Man, he grows some awesome tobacco. He probably experiments and tests theorys alot too. My theorys are first to grow some good smokable tobacco, which I managed this yr. for the first time. [thanks FTT], and repeat, allowing room for improvement.

Marcovanmeer, your question on how to replicate Drum Halfzware intrigued me so today I bought some in that style, Peter Stokkebye's Amsterdam Shag (there's an easy joke there). It tasted great, much better than my previous experiments with adding fire cured to cigarettes. It was definitely cased. I tasted chocolate and probably licorice. I am going to try to replicate it using a casing mixture of chocolate extract, licorice extract, coriander (just a hunch), and maybe a small amount of vanilla. In the Amsterdam Shag the chocolate seems to balance the fire cured nicely. I'll just mix Flue Cured with Fire Cured. I'll report back.

Amsterdam tasted extremely spicy to me. I cut it 50/50 with Stokkebye's Norwegian and really liked it alot better. Of course it's all a matter of personal preference.

Yeah I wanted to try some of their other blends but I already felt like an idiot spending $10 for 1.25 ounces of tobacco when I have a cellar full of whole leaf.

Sounds like a better price. Thing is, I only wanted to taste it, I don't need a half pound of it.
I checked your link. That was for pipe cut. I don't think anyone can sell shag cut for $13 a half pound. The pipe cut probably tastes similar but the fine shag cut was a nice treat.

You're right, I was thinking about the D&R Three Sails I added to the Amsterdam/Norwegian mix. It was shag cut. My bad.

Mother of Pearl. How's $13.00 for 8 oz. grab you? http://www.rollyourown.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=225_257
They have a great selection of D&R also. I prefer the D&R. $7 plus change flat rate shipping. They sell tubes and stuff too. MM pipes $5.00.

At least you can order it. Here in Michigan, it is illegal to purchase cigarettes or RYO tobacco online. But with all of the leaf I have to make my own smokes, it does not bother me much. I'm just wondering what will be the next restriction or change in law.
