  1. How should the roasted golden Virginia tobacco leaves (Burley tobacco leaves) be processed to become qualified pipe tobacco?
  2. Can fermentation or aging be artificially accelerated?
  3. Does artificial intervention in the fermentation process require adding additional microorganisms or enzymes?
  4. Is sterilization treatment necessary for the finished tobacco?
  5. When pressing whole tobacco leaves into blocks for aging, is sterilization treatment required before pressing them into blocks?

Thank you all for your answers and explanations.

1. Clarification is needed: burley and Virginia are different types of tobacco. Other than cutting them into a preferred form, they don’t really require more processing, once aging is complete.

2. Yes: it is called kilning, and plans for chambers can be found on this forum.

3. No.

4. No: sterilization is used in chewing tobacco and Snus, but it ends most metabolic changes that occur by aging the tobacco.

5. No: monitoring temperature, humidity, and moisture content of the leaf is a better way to prevent mold, and allow for better aging.

1. Process the tobacco to your heart's content. That's part of the hobby. Do what you want with the tobacco; its all up to your personal tastes. Learn from others about what they do, why they do it, and how it turned out for them. If dried green tobacco is fine for you, have at it. If otoh you want to color cure, age, case, cavendish, and press your tobacco and whatever else you want to subject your tobacco to, enjoy the process!! None of it is "necessary"; its all up to personal taste and is a bit of an art. Please, Let us know what you do and how it turns out for you.
4. Sterilization is pointless. The moment you open your container it becomes contaminated. Mold spores and bacteria are ubiquitous.
