This experiment actually works pretty well and you end up with a soft box press. I used a 5/16 core box/bull nose bit on a table and ran it progressively deeper until I got the right depth. You definitely need to rotate the stick otherwise one side is flat, but if you roll the corners out before wrapping it turns out great. I should probably route a top piece with a very shallow groove, though. Used pine 1x4 and some butcher block oil.

Why not get a 2x4 and cut it in sections then drill a hole or holes throughand slice it in half? Or for that matter, clamp 2 pieces of 1x together and drill the hole directly at the 'seam'' to avoid cutting in half? Boom, cigar mold!
