If you were to assign an adjective or two to the various national cigar leaves what would they be?

I'm new to cigars and thus far have only smoked a handful of cubans....trying to get a basic handle on what character(s) may be said to describe Nicaraguan, Honduran cigars etc.,.

Hello

There are many ways and characteristics to describe tobacco from different countries. I like focusing on the texture and main flavors. Of course tobacco can be very different from the same country depending on variety, harvest time, specific region etc...

However I find in general Nicaraguan cigars to have a somewhat gritty earthy texture. Flavors have a wide range but I mostly get notes of pepper earth and sometimes cocoa/chocolate. I've also had very woody and leathery flavors and even some fruit here and there. But overall when I think Nicaragua I think gritty pepper and earth.

I find Dominican cigars to be less gritty but still earthy. It's a different type of earth more musty or damp. I also get a lot of nutty flavors from Dominican tobacco but there is still pepper and leather to be had in most Dominicans.

From the cuban cigars I've had the tobacco seems to lean more vegetal. You'll pick up a lot more grass/hay type flavors. One thing I've noticed is there is never any gritty earth to be had in cubans. It's hard to describe but they almost seem cleaner so to speak with a slightly creamy texture.

I can't say I've ever had a puro of another country but I know Honduran tobacco is said to be similar to Nicaraguan because of the close proximity.

One other thing to be aware of is that non cuban cigars tend to be much stronger in the nicotine department. Most cubans in my opinion are medium bodied and medium strength.

hard to describe a wide menu of flavors just by nationality alone. The blend varies from one to another but I have found that a genuine Montecristo from Cuba is like a cream soda . What they do or how its blended I have no idea but thats what I've tasted . The few Dominicans I've had were floral or just plain. Nicaraguans have been creamy or even a cocoa ,sweeter than others anyway. Hondurans are a mild flavor ,but a back note of spicy. My nose and palate are a little off kilter as a result of a chemical plant I worked at for many years so you will likely have different results.

Thanks guys....I just smoked 6 different cubans and I was surprised by how much alike they actually were...I was expecting them to be quite different one from another. I'm looking forward to trying other non cubans.
