Good luck taking any of the recommended supplements because they will not increase your energy levels. Any increase in energy would be from a placebo effect. On the other hand, the data in the "Good Health" link is a good read. The data has been out there for YEARS that there are benefits to tobacco via reduced Parkinson's, Alzheimer, Pain reduction etc. It's a real shame that researchers refuse to delve into the health benefits of smoking. They could probably isolate quite a few chemicals that could be used to cure or prevent some of the major diseases of mankind.

Actually many of those supplements will increase mental energy and focus. The antioxidants and the adaptogens will just by improving overall functioning. The Omega 3's also will help mental functioning.

He makes some compelling points, but one thing I see missing is a comparison of life expectancy between smokers of unaldulterated tobacco, versus those who smoke processed tobacco with additives from large tobacco companies. I think this would be more instructive than the circular arguments I see the thread devolve into.

No they won't. But if you take them and get a feeling of more mental focus.. good for you. Most of the supplements mentioned increase the ability of the mitochondria to burn fuel and produce energy to be utilized by the brain/body. The efficiency of the mitochondria decrease over time but a boost in mitochondrial efficiency does not correlate to an increase in energy levels. Even the Omega-3's do not increase mental focus. But like I said, if you take them and think you are concentrating better..good for you. Omega-3's do many good things from reduction in Alzheimer's disease to lower heart disease but not mental concentration.

If you want to increase mental concentration you need stimulants! Choline though not a stimulant would help with concentration because it can be converted into the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine acts, among other things as a stimulus barrier, meaning that you will not be apt to notice the traffic outside while you are studying. Another way to increase Acetylcholine receptors is by smoking.
