I was wondering about the nornicotine level in Jaffna, which GRIN lists as 1.8. Is this high enough to be a significant concern?

I’ve read in another thread that nornicotine, while more carcinogenic than nicotine, is less of a concern for pipe smokers. I just wanted to ask, because, at a glance, 1.8 seemed noticeably higher than other cultivars; however, I have no idea how much would be significant.

I will also be air-drying with a flue or kiln, so I don’t know if that changes anything.

Thanks!

Big picture required, I think.

Jaffna is high in nicotine, too, right? So I think the questions you might ask are is the ratio comparable to other tobaccos? would you smoke less? And if so, why does any of it matter?

I probably smoked 3 or 4 times more than I do now back when I smoked store bought tobacco.

High nicotine seems to go hand in hand with higher nornicotine. In

Looking at the 7 in nicotine range in the high 50s to 60s, nornicotine ranges frim 0 to 6.1. But again, I don’t know the significance of the numbers.
And, true, I’m unlikely to pack a bowl full of 6.1% nic leaf everyday, more like a condiment I think.

i use straight dark air, or straight Rustica as chewing tobacco…..
Granted, I don’t have to use much.
Maybe a bowl of dark air if the pipe was a kiseru type…?

Do you do anything to process it before you chew it?
I was curious about dark air-the fire-cured varieties. I was wondering if you can just air cure a fire-cured variety with success.

I air cure everything- stalk cure: faster, better results and less proteins.
The fire cured can be air cured with great flavor, too.
After stalk curing, I kiln it for a month in a yogurt incubator.
I coursely grind the leaf to about a 1/4” flake- by hand or blender, depending on how damp the leaf is.
Then I add an equal weight of water, and water bath cook it for about 20 minutes, to pasteurize it. Then I use it. I’ve tried adding alkali to it a few times, but the “rush” of nicotine makes me feel like I’m about to overdose and be sick.

Kind of interesting to me-I looked through the GRIN database, and at a glance, there didn’t seem to be a huge correlation between high nicotine and (relatively) high nornicotine levels. Some high nic cultivars had 0 or less than 1 or 2, and some low nic cultivars(nic in the teens) had nornicotine levels in the 30s. Maybe a more thorough look would show otherwise.
