Re: I'm off the wall Brother

How I made it
I used 3 pieces of Poplar with a Router I cut a 3/4" channel in one piece. Than glued and stacked the three pieces, clamped them and put them to the side to bond.
Using a piece of 2 and 1/2" cold rolled flat stock 1/8th of an inch thick by 5 inches long I drilled a 3/4" hole center. I than cut it in half and shaped the the two pieces using a table Jig Saw.
The piece to be used as the cutter I put in a Vice and with half round file removed metal from the half circle in that piece making a cutting edge and sharping the edge.
I than drilled a hole through the two pieces to join them, the hole in the piece to be mounted to the wooden block I taped with a 10 - 32 thread tap so I could screw a 10 - 32 screw into the hole.
The hole in the piece to act as the cutter I drilled a second time making it large enough for my 10 - 32 screw to just fit through. In the next step I joined the to pieces with a 10 - 32 screw and
positioned the two pieces on the wooden block. Marking where I will drill holes to fasten the pieces to the wooden block and drilled the holes. Than reposition the pieces and marked the wooden
block through the holes I had just drilled so pilot holes could be drilled in it for screws to hold the cutter pieces to the wooden block (mounting the cutter).
I than took the pieces apart and case hardened the metal pieces following the hardening I gave them a Black Oxide finish.

For a handle I used a small Oak stool leg cutting it to length and drilling a hole in one end to attach to the top cutter half. To finish things up I applied Linseed Oil to the wood pieces rubbing it in and
wiping it off with a rag and towel. I than put every thing together mounting the bottom cutter half to the wooden block. The top cutter half I inserted into the hole I had drilled in the handle gently
hammering into the hole until it was snug. Than joined the top cutter to the bottom cutter with the 10 -32 screw, screwing the screw into the bottom cutter half tightly and putting a nut on it to lock
the screw.

Today I'll add the gauge assembly for setting cut length. I'll also find out if the bid I placed on the Antique Tuck Cutter will win or not.

A table Jig Saw is not a hand held Jig Saw it is a table saw.
The cost of my Home Made Tuck Cutter was 43 dollars.

Re: I'm off the wall Brother

I need to add if looking at the second photo in post #104 the screw all the way to the left has an over sized nut on it (it is fit over the screw not screwed on to it) this acts as a stop for the cutter as well as a fastener.

I found an old metal scale and put it to good use. You can pretty much see how I did this in the photos. The rod I heated red hot and with a 3 pound hammer flattened one end and shaped it with a small hand grinder, than bent it 45 degrees.
Again I applied a Black Oxide finish with heat and oily rag. The square tubing on the scale I drilled a hole them threaded it so I could screw the 10 -32 Thumb Screw into it. The square tub is the carriage for the rod and thumb screw to lock the rod in place after setting it for the cigar length. I tack wielded the piece of square tub to the scale, but if a wielder is not handy, some J. B. Wield (epoxy) will work just fine. About the Epoxy (If wanting to set parts quickly you can heat to 150 / 200 degrees and the parts will be bonded in a few minutes).

In the last photo you can see the nut on the screw that fastens the cutter to the wooden block and acts as a stop for the cutter. You can also see the sharpened edge I filed to cut my Cigars, I did not add a spring to cause the cut arm to return to the raised position because I don't think it needs one.
Happy Puffing Guys - Enjoy em if ya got em

Re: I'm off the wall Brother

You don't need a torch outfit to do this MAP gas in the small yellow bottles will work just fine for your torch.

Wonderful craftsmanship. Do you plan to market them through your store? Food grade Butcher Block Oil will add some protection and make clean up easier.

No I will be leaving it as a single, if problem occur I might change to a double.

No I won't be selling these I just wanted to try my hand at making one. I put a light coat of linseed oil on the wood.
The handle could be of a different shape so it fit the look better but it works..

Thanks for the cheer guys!

Now others if they wanted could make something similar now that I have planted a seed.

Factories do it to fit the box. I only cut the loose stuff off the end back to firm cigar. My lengths vary with the filler I use. When I have enough scrap left over, I'll roll a cigar from just scrap, then start another scrap pile in a small plastic tub.
