Good morning from Madison, WI!

New member here, planning my first growing season at age 26. I mostly smoke cigarettes and a pipe. My primary motivations for learning to grow tobacco are 1) I have tried many variations of commercial cigarettes and I haven't really found one I liked all that much. I cannot seem to find the right combination of flavor, smoothness, and strength, so I figured I would try making my own blends to seek out what I like. Closest I've gotten is the Marlboro Blend 27s, but they're a little weak and not as satisfying as I like. 2) There are no good tobacconists around here! I have some niiiice pipe tobacco pouches from the Tobacconist in Gatlinberg, TN, which I try and visit every year, but I am otherwise restricted to popular commercial brands, which are similarly not that appealing to me. 3)Sustainability and having a skill that is useful in a scenario where the economy fails and trades such as growing tobacco are in favor. Thus, I am looking to start my journey growing my own tobacco. I live in an apartment with only a balcony to grow on, but my goal is to get 4-5 plants going this year. Maybe I'll start a grow log, after all I just ordered my seeds a couple days ago. I've read up on a lot of historical posts relevant to my current plans, so thank you for maintaining such an archive of knowledge!

As for my other interests, I enjoy photography (mostly glitch photography with cameras I have modified to be able to manipulate and 'glitch' the image, I'll include some examples below,) videogames, esoteric internet culture/history, and Japanese culture, especially their entertainment media. I am currently learning Japanese and plan on visiting this November! I hear they have some nice exclusive cigarettes there, as well as a smorgesboard of unique pipe tobacco if you know where to find it. Anyways, it is good to be here and I wanted to let you know I am grateful for the knowledge base a lot of other members have built up and shared over the years. See some examples of my glitch photography below and say hi! I wonder if any of you are in Wisconsin, too? I put some fun Madison, WI weather stuff in my signature, too, I hope it isn't too much. This is kind of a test post for that, as well, so hopefully it is alright :)

Hmm... looks like the images in my signature are cemented in time from when I make a post. I was hoping the links would refresh and display the new up to date image as time went on, but this is fun, too. A little time capsule as to what the weather was like in my city when I made a specific post is interesting.

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to read the New Growers' FAQ, linked in the menu bar. You may wish to scan through the topics in our Index of Key Forum Threads, also linked in the menu bar. I suspect that the content of a "signature" is static, and does not re-query once the proxy is first loaded. (Also, bunches of stuff in a signature tend to visually dwarf the intended content of a post.)

Welcome, have you considered doing an indoor grow? There are other members here who also live in apartments and have had very good results growing their tobacco indoors. You can find their posts in the Grow Blogs forum. Besides, what's more important than learning to grow tobacco is learning how to color cure and age tobacco. That's when it starts becoming an art. Btw: you're not the only anime fan here.

Yeah, there are some fantastic resources collated in there! I've been using them to guide my decisions as I prepare for my own grow and curing + fermenting. I've updated my signature to a drawing I made of wizards and witches browsing tobacco products instead. Earlier, I was inspired by some signatures I saw on other forums that had weather summary banners which DID update, since I know some people here share the weather conditions on a given day when they post, but I like this as a replacement if the weather isn't possible.
I look forward to posting with you all!
