So I’m exploring the kits still and thinking about making larger purchases and I was wondering how much leaf everyone keeps on hand? I know this will vary WIDELY but I’m just curious.
Too much here. Lol. I started with kits, then went to lbs to try out. When I found blends that worked out, I started to keep 1-2 lbs of specific leaf on hand. If I really liked certain leaf, I may have ordered more. Now it’s out of control. Ha ha ha. I always said to myself, start small and see if it’s something I continue to enjoy before going crazy with it. Nowadays I keep a spreadsheet with “inventory”. I look at each leaf, almost like seasonings are to cooking. Currently I’m sitting on about 150-200 lbs (of purchased leaf) on a regular basis. However, that may be a lot for some or not much at all to others. Personally I do something with leaf every day. Whether it’s jotting down a blend to try, prepping leaf to roll with, binding up a blend, wrapping up some sticks from a previous session, or all the above. Eventually, if you have even the slightest green thumb, you may consider growing your own. If you go the growing route, based upon my research, you should hit up @skychaser with Northwoods Seeds

Best bang for your buck and an extensive seed catalog, not just limited to tobacco.

In a nutshell, do what works for you and what your comfortable with. It can become a very slippery slope though. ;-)

I have been rolling for about 8 months and have collected almost 40 pounds , what keeps me purchasing is the fear of not being able to get what I want once it is sold out. I have already missed out on purchasing Honduran leaf, Broadleaf maduro and much more. For the most part though Whole Leaf has been great at restocking my most used tobacco.

I've just started with rolling and blending from whole leaf a few months ago, but I started with a 9lb of quarters of each variety I figured suitable so just kind of shotgun theory out the gate. But now that I've had time to figure out which types I like the most I'm planning on doing 5 pounds each of the kinds I really like and a pound each for the rest that I experiment with going to end up being around 40 lbs. maybe a lot more given this is more an obsession than a hobby for me but it all depends on yearly tobacco consumption for each individual.

@FrostD 200lbs! Your loaded for bear arnt you and I plan on getting more cigar oriented seeds next year. But I just bought 2 more of the kits and a pound of the habano obscuro wrapper. So we’ll see how much I wind up stock piling over the coming months.
Lol. It took some time to build up that much. Some were to be able to have on hand preemptively while putting together blends. In my opinion, better to be prepared!

The kit blends are nice. I’ve only tried the Terroso Profundo from WLT and it’s a good one! Slippery slope home rolling is! Ha ha ha!

I started with a WLT kit, then bought a few quarters, and then whole pounds from WLT and LO, right up there with the big boys LOL! I have maybe 5lbs of tobacco on hand right now, all bought. This is my first year rolling and first year growing. I am hoping to end up with maybe 200 nice leaves from the crop, knock on wood. Next year, more. I would like to be rolling around 300 or 400 cigars per year as I smoke around 5 or 6 a week and I don't mind buying one or two, every once in a while. I will probably still buy a lot of stuff like CT Shade wrapper, or the Ecuador Viso I just found to be so nice.

I doubt if I will ever have more than about 30 lbs on hand, even growing. 50 lbs, tops. If growing proves to be too much trouble, there really would be no reason for me to have more than 5 to 10 lbs of leaf on hand.

I would be ok with 30lbs. When everything comes in I’ll be at 5 plus what I’m growing but that isn’t going to be a whole lot. Kind of a side note. The stuff WLT has in stock let’s say it says they have x amount left do they typically try to re stock that if possible or no? I know it depends on what’s available to them but just curious so I know how to order the things I like

Things can change. I used to buy Izmir Ozbas and Prilep but those are no longer available and haven't been for awhile. Those were replaced by Katerini and Krumovgrad. Sometimes different cigar leaf varieties come and go. I don't know for sure, but my guess is a multitude of factors can affect availability, including fluctuating suppliers, business shut downs, fluctuating weather in various countries, natural disasters, wholesale availability or radical price changes, changing regulations in a multitude of countries, etc, etc. to name just a few.

edit: Izmir is back or never left. My memory leaves much to be desired.

edit edit: Katerini is gone or never was. Doh!
