Greetings everyone, from Suffolk, VA, the "peanut capital" of the world! This past April I moved my family from the city to the country to a new house we had built on a 10 acre plot. We have about 2 acres cleared, so the wife started a vegetable garden and it's been doing better than expected, so I've started considering growing my own tobacco. I'm an occasional pipe and cigar smoker, so I'll be doing a lot of research into the best varieties and processing processes for pipe tobacco, mostly.

Welcome to the forum. You'll be starting tobacco seed indoors some time in February, so you have a few months to ponder the options. The most reliable source of seed is Northwood Seeds.

Check out the New Growers' FAQ (link at the top of the page). Also, you might want to bookmark our Index of Key Forum Threads: http://fairtradetobacco.com/threads/3868-Key-threads-in-the-FTT-forum

If you enter your general location into your profile, it will appear alongside each of your posts.

What sort of pipe tobacco do you usually smoke?

Thanks Bob! I don't discriminate much with regards to what I like to smoke. I really enjoy navy flakes, burley flakes, medium englishes, and Balkan blends. I've mostly gravitated away from aromatics with the exception of Gawith & Hoggarth. I've read through your pipe blend recipe thread, I look forward to trying out a few of those.

And thank-you everyone else for your responses as well! I'm sorry, I'm still learning how to navigate this format.
