I think my wife is going to let me spring for a Powermatic S. I find a lot of good reviews, but the thread here has a number of incidents. Is it really that much faster than the New Heavy Duty Shreader. Speed is important to me, but only with durability. Can't afford to replace it in a year. Any opinions would be Appreciated. Thanks

Also, I found A possible replacement bearing for this unit (F698Z). Can anyone confirm that is the correct, latest replacement bearing for the Powermatic 2? Thanks. (couldn't find a way to edit the original post, sorry for the bump)

The Powermatic S has been redesigned several times. We are still using a 5 year old machine in the shop, but we are careful with it. Powermatic has a 1 year manufacturer's warranty on their "S" shredder. You have to send it to them, but they'll fix it for free barring any abuse. If you take care of it, it will last a long time.

I've read several places where people say they were using up to 5 year old machinges. They have to be amoung the best design in their class. I saw a Youtube video of a couple of guys stuffing handfulls of folded and wadded leaves with the main stem still in them into the shredder. They ran at least a couple of pounds through it like that, and it never slowed down. I'd never do that though, that much money is an investment to me.

I too have been using the Powermatic S for about 5 years with essentially no problems. They are very robust machines. As for the bearing you would have to press the shaft out to get to the bearing. The bearing number will be printed on the side of the bearing.

The trials and tribulations are around here somewhere.

It’s a beast.
