This is the second year I have grown Silver River. the first year I used a high fertiliser feed until the bud formed. I noticed that the leaf was very high in nicotine with no menthol taste what so ever, it smoked more like a Chesterfield. This year I only dug in some manure prior to planting and did not use any fertiliser what so ever on any of my plants, I just let them get on with growing.

This year it could have been a totally different plant, much lower nicotine and it has a pronounced menthol flavour, It just goes to show what you feed your plants makes a big difference when harvested and dried.

Has anyone figured out what "class" Silver River falls in? Burley, Flue Cure? I have my seed organized by class and I'm not sure where to put the Silver River. FTT Seed Bank has it listed under "Other".

"Other" is a very good classification! If I can get off my lazy ass I plan to have it tested by a USDA lab this summer. I almost did so last year but never got around to it.There's a lab in North Carolina that will do the testing. I need to do a little more research though because there's gotta be one closer to me in Maryland or perhaps southern PA. I think if a lab could report the sucrose ester level it would narrow the search down somewhat as to a Burley or a Flue Cured.

I would class it as a primitive or other unless we can find out more information on the plant, My hunch is it comes from either Argentina or Uruguay and was grown close to the river plate. also known as the river of silver.
