I am setting up my 8" Dobsonian in my cul-de-sac tomorrow and sent an open invite to my neighbors via our neighborhood facebook page. We'll see how much interest I get and how well the weather cooperates.

At around peak time here (1:54 Central) I grabbed a postcard from today's USPS delivery of recyclable materials (this one was offering to buy one of my rental properties for about half what it's worth). I grabbed a straight pin from my wife's pincushion and poked a hole in it. Then I picked up another bit of nuisance paper and folded it in half to get a non-printed side. Laid that on my front porch and held the postcard up facing more or less the direction of the Sun. I got a very nice, clear (id small) image on the paper -- we got more coverage than I thought we would.

Overall today has been like an outdoor meeting of managers. The sun is fully up and the sky is clear, but it's still not very bright.

Bob's Authentic Astrophotography of the Solar Eclipse 2024

I checked out this location yesterday. Perfect angle on the sun for the eclipse. Today, eager to miss nothing, I rolled out a swivel desk chair.

My trusty, eclipse glasses were carefully positioned, and I looked up.

Nothing but thick clouds, with a threat of drizzle. How did the wildlife behave? The birds, rabbits and insects seemed to be pointing at me and laughing. The cloudy sky definitely darkened—dark enough for me to turn on a light indoors.

Sometimes a camera can detect things that the human eye does not: auroras, for example. I'm not sure if my camera was pointed in exactly the right direction, since it was so cloudy here in southwest Virginia, but the photo series seems to have captured it.

We should enjoy the sweet moments of life, whenever they come our way.
