Newly developed techniques for mechanical harvesting of commercially grown Burley have been developed over the past few years to cut down on the need for hard to find seasonal workers. The mechanical stalk harvester combined with a mesh rack and hoist conversion for the conventional curing barn can cut labor needs by as much as 65%. The stalk notching harvester puts a notch toward the end of the stalk that is used to hang the stalk on a wire rack and eliminates the need to spear the stalk onto a stick. Once full, the mesh rack can be moved with a front loader on a farm tractor.
