After I cured my leaves I put them in plastic bags for storage and now they have a strange smell, kind of sour, not sure how to describe it. I have multiple varieties and they all had pleasant and different fragrances to them, and now they all smell the same. The characteristic aroma of the variety comes back when smoking to some extent but the unpleasant smell is still there. It is not mold (stored bone dry). Is it ammonia? Not sure what that's supposed to smell like. Or could it be related to the plastic bags?

Kind of hard to say, but could be buildup of ammonia. Does it stick in the nose?

Did you kiln the leaves before storing them? If not, it can be the ammonia. I prefer cardboard boxes for long term storage of tobacco, the cardboard acts like a sponge, adsorbing the excess of humidity and releasing it when it’s too dry. It also lets the tobacco “breath”.
