Dan, I don't believe they tie "hands" of tobacco on a stick. I think you'll find it is two or three leaves at a time they tie. That process is for green tobacco, preparing it for color curing. If you'll look on YouTube for "looping tobacco" or "tying tobacco" I think you'll get a couple of hits. Good Luck,

John

Look in this post I saved it so I would not lose it again and just watched it again.
http://fairtradetobacco.com/showthread.php?1071-Stringing-Tobacco I see that it is a different address than the first one I quoted from chicken. After I posted the message it came up with the same URL as chickens with all the ..... in it but it loaded from the URL shown.

I watched the video right after FmGrowit posted it.
It's a definite time saver . I had to practice a few times till I got the wraps right but After 3-4 weeks everything is holding. A stray leaf or 2 has been loosed.

Don't lift the weight of the leaf from the string or they will fall off. that means hang the stick never lay it down. Otherwise I have lost a leaf or two walking under them and bumping my head into them.

i watched all those vids and cant see them actually securing the leaves to the stick. to me it just looks like they hang over the stick. i did a stick yesterday, and sort of got the hang of it, but since mine will get some wind in the carport, i wrapped the string around the stick after every bunch. also that spaced them out a little more. problem is i have to hold the sting ball to do that and its much more clumsy then they look just holding the string.

am i missing something where they secure that string?

The string is in a container somewhere convenient to the tying horse. I use a coffee can with a little weight in it. I cut an "X" in the plastic top to allow the string to feed out. If you are using the 2 lb cones of string I guess a modified gallon plastic jug would work.

I don't recommend the string method for windy conditions due to shrinkage at stems. Unless you tie the stems well below the rod to allow for drooping Keep the stem hitting the rod and give an extra wrap or 2:cool: It really works well but if subjected to wind try securing your end leaf wraps really well to avoid slippage.. The shrinkage in the stems causes slack and therefore droop in the string.

i get that shrinkage will cause drooping, but i dont get what you mean by tie below the rod. also end wraps. do you mean the first and last bunch on the rod so they dont move towards the center of the rod?
