We're having a cold snap. High of 47 but gorgeous and sunny. I need to get back to tree planting shortly.

I think they'll be ok. The hardwoods are hibernating and it's hard to kill a Virginia pine. High 46 tomorrow and rain. Then it's going to warm up again. I got a few planted but most will be in the garage till I can get them in the ground. I'm doing the worst ones first. Some of those hardwoods have two foot tap roots going down. The pine seedlings will only need about a twelve inch hole.

Anyone know where "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" comes from? One of the older fellers at work said it come from when they used to use canons, they'd stack the canon balls on a brass square, called a monkey, it's kinda like the triangle used for pool balls (billiards). When it got cold enough, the brass would shrink enough that the canon balls would fall off the brass monkey.

You got it partly right. The "monkey" was a triangle generally made of oak to store cannon balls near the cannon. The brass monkey never existed and the rest of the story about different coefficients of expansion between iron and brass is so small the story is bullshit. -·- J.

Lol Wazz, I'm sure lots a folks here think I'm a frenchie but I'm as english as any other anglo. Lately I been hearin lots about people havin trouble with their vehicles in the cold. Some of the guys at work complain they plug em in and still have a hard time. I got a dodge dakota 4X4 with the 318 v8, I love it. Never plugged it in but it always starts. No joke, -20 I'll turn the key and she don't even turn twice before she's runnin. Now if only I could get some heat outta the dang thing lol. Weathers supposed to warm up some next week for us. Goin from -30°c to +5°c round wednesday. Heck, a week ago it got to +10°c and then down to -20°c within a day and a half.

That's the story I heard.

Spitting a little snow, said we might get 2 or 3 inches today.
Calling for highs in the 50's next week after being 5 below 0 this week, goofy ass freaking weather.

Great thing that happened this winter is, the power company cut down that Ash tree that was hanging over my tobacco, our area is having a big problem with the emerald ash borer beetles so they have been cutting them down when ever they can.

This is the way I heard it. In the days of steam engines, they had a governor, a device to keep the pressure down. This was a spinning device with two arms on it, brass balls on the ends of the arms. As the pressure increased the device would spin faster. As it would spin faster the arms would rise due to centrifical force. They would get to a certain heigth and the safety would trip releasing excess pressure. The device was commonly called a brass monkey. Of course, YMMV!
