I'm getting Some weird ass fumes coming from my kiln all of a sudden.
In the last three days, At first I thought it was the new crock pot.So I took it out
I just got a all metal liner one, for 15 bucks. The last one had an plastic outer shell that the pot sat in. But I haven't put the new one in yet, the fumes are kind of still there but no where near what they were
These fumes will make you cough at first but as soon as you open the door they dissipate quick.
Has any of you ever heard of this ?
I just checked all the wires there warm but not hot.

I wonder if the fumes have penetrated what you have for insulation and if that is why you still smell it even after you have taken the plastic shelled crock pot out? I also wonder if the fumes have penetrated the leaf that was in the kiln also?

I wondered the same thing it seems to be going away.
I just smoked a couple cigarettes no taste of the fumes
I Put a new crock pot in there and am testing it now
I'll go check it in a few hours.

Maybe you lucked out on that then.
The plastic shelled crock pot may have had a defective capacitor or resistor in it that may have nuked itself.

Tough to define "weird ass fumes" but I know electrical shorts etc are very unique in their smell. Do they smell like electrical problems? I get a stinging in my eyes when I open my kiln but that is the normal ammonia etc escaping

The fumes have died down a lot now
I just went out and grabbed some of my Virginia Gold, Virginia Bright Leaf and some Green Brior Burley
and cut it up in my Pasta Cutter and made a few smokes and it's AOK
The smell was more like Styrofoam than anything else I put the new crock pot on top of a piece of cedar
and after that the smell went way down I think the heat from the first crock pot was emitting fumes from the
bottom ( To close to the Styrofoam) plus it's plastic shell.
My crisis is now officially over think god.
Thank you guys for your input
Boy it sure feels good smoking my own FREE tobacco

The 5qt from Wally world I got has a metal housing. Which gets HOT. Which is good. I'd have to see what exact model I got but does fine so far.

After I put a new batch of leaves in my kiln the fumes started up again
It's coming from the Tobacco
Now when I smell the leaves they have a faint aroma of a urine type of smell or a " Ammonia " smell.
I took a hand out and test smoked some from 5 different leaves and it was passable so I shredded the whole
hand and mixed it in with some Turkish from bigbonner and it is not to bad. I'm trying to keep up with the smokers here
and that ought to keep them supplied till my next shipment from bigbonner and when my batches are ready.

DK, The farmers up here use anhydrous ammonia for fertilizer which they inject into the soil. the ammonia smell in it is so strong that it will stop you from breathing! It "freezes" your respiratory system. I guess i am trying to explain what ammonia smells like, There is ammonia in most foaming glass cleaners, you might try smelling that to get an idea of what ammonia smells like. Ted

I just went out and smell the hand that was hanging in the back of the kiln
and it smelled kinda like a chocolate type of tobacco smell It smells like some tobacco I smelled that my grandfather had for his pipe
when I was a little kid ......I think it's close to being done.

I'm going to rotate my hands in the kiln the ones towards the front are
closer to the bulb and a dryer heat while the ones in the back are closer to the crock pot and a wetter heat.
I think every two days when I refill the crock pot with water ought to be just right.

i was thinking of rotating mine also,, it seems as though the hands far away from the light are getting more moisture,,,,
