We've been getting some heavy thunderstorms lately. I can move mine inside in a couple minutes, but I only have three trays. You've got three million trays. Watch the weather.

Greenhouse survived the hail storm last week so I should be good.

Moved them all outside to the greenhouse today..... Maybe they will finally start growing. So far behind compared to last year.

Are you fertilizing?

They got their first supplemental feeding last week. I really think 4yr old bulbs kicked my butt.

I did change my starting soil a bit this year, but it was by adding some that already had fertilizer to the bottom of the cells, so it should have been better than last year.

Jeesh, they don't want to grow. I know the feeling from last yr.
They should take off soon tho.
The peat for some reason kicked my butt last yr. Holds to much moisture? I found letting the trays dry out makes a big difference. They ain't yellow so I don't think they are lacking nutrients.

I have some plants under real old bulbs right now and they are doing fine. I think they would get leggy if it was the bulbs?

Not sure. The ones directly under the bulbs are twice the size of the ones at the edges. Two small trays with no artificial light on the window sill are even smaller. That's why I tend to think a lighting problem.

One thing different this year is I never set my timer for the lights. They have just been on, with no "daylight cycle" like last year.

One thing I noticed was the plants with the Baccto soil took of like rockets.
The plants in the Black Gold potting soil took there time. Boboro had to restart his seedlings again this year. That just Sucks. I think it is the freaking junk the put in different types of soil.

Mine are all a little bit smaller than your latest picture. It will probably be mid-May before mine are big enough to be transplanted.

You think your behind, I'm still trying to get seed to sprout. They will germinate then when I move them to cell trays they die in one to three days. I'm on my third try. I figure if I can so to live and plant by mid June I should be alright. What do you think?

My first year I started seed in April, planned early June. You should be fine. Late season curing can be hard, but with your flue cure chamber, not so much worry.

I don't transplant, I use a q-tip to drop a few seeds in each cell of the trays, then thin to the strongest in each cell over the first few weeks.

Maybe something in your starting soil is bad, or too much water (damping off)?

I use the same method as you. Water could be an issue. After I seed I let the tray soak water up from the bottom and the potting mix is very wet and does not dry much for quit awhile. I did not have a problem last year doing the same thing. My first and second try was with this method my third try was sprouting in a jar and transplanting to cells. All three were a failure. This time I went back to seeding direct to cells but watching water to not over do it.

Rick, I water the same way. Surface gets very damp, I don't add water until the surface soil shows signs of drying. I also remove the clear tray covers when they are about 1/2" tall, leaving the covers on retains too much moisture.

The last batch I planted about three days ago I did not use the plastic cover at all. Do you think I need to?

Not if you are attentive to the surface moisture and it is warm enough to not need the cover to retain heat. Once they start to germinate, they cannot be allowed to dry out, quick way to kill them before they even get started. That is the main reason I use the covers until I get green.

Thanks PO. But I would rather grow like a pro than look like one, and this years plants aren't all that good.

I'm jealous of your entire set up - and your ability/space to grow so many plants! Good luck with your seedlings!
