My pet updates:

Colt (the Brittany) is doing well, loving the country!

Dobbie (the Rattus norvegicus...Fancy Rat) is enjoying the new place as well. It's nice and warm inside and he recently discovered his obsession of Ritz Crackers

Brittany is a wonderful companion. And an excellent bird dog. Some will say they are not good for ducks, but from experience, I have a different opinion. Ours would put to shame, many a Labrador.

Very unique dog!

We used to have a Transylvanian hound, best dog I ever had. A wire haired dachsound that was also a great dog, a little too much bark, but fun loving dog.

Ah, you were sitting behind him in the photo - no wonder you're not smiling, but look as though you've smelled something really bad....:)

People are paying big bucks to come down south to train dogs in winter. The trainers get big bucks per dog. They do so on the ranch Iv'e been working. They come from as far as michigan to our local if you have the right settings for the training. And facilities for the trainers. They bring their own big screen tvs,.heh heh

Dammit I forgot my pic!I had a cool cat dog situation pic.

Shanghai's Flower Bed

Garden20140928_1589_ShanghaisFlowers_Bob_600.jpg

Old man and his dog.

It's been nearly 3 years since Shanghai died on a cold, drizzling night just before Christmas in 2011. She was old and arthritic, blind and deaf by the time her hour arrived at 13 years of age. I burried her the following morning in the lightly thawed ground above the garden beds, where she used to lay down to watch me work the tobacco.

We had a special bond. She was a 100 pound, fluffy-haired beast of a Sharpei mix that my son had adopted as a puppy from a shelter. Starting out as a fuzzy, giant burrito, she grew rapidly into a mighty animal who enjoyed hauling me up steep backpacking trails. The two of us walked hundreds of miles of the Appalachian Trail, in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Before she was 12 weeks old, I had trained her (like a field dog) to follow both voice commands and hand signals. When she was about 18 months old, I put a dog pack over her back for the first time, and she gloried in wearing it from that day forward (carrying all of her own food, water and minimal doggie gear, on treks ranging from one to eight days). If she saw me simply lift the dog pack from the closet, she would begin to dance in circles, eager to hit the trail.

She did not like going into water. On one trail--near the Virginia-West Virginia border--that crossed a creek on a single-log bridge, which she could not take advantage of, she refused to wade into the early spring run-off to cross. Unable to carry her, and still navigate the slippery rocks, I (now barefoot) was forced to drag her by her harness through the 15' width of the crossing.

We returned by the same route the following day. I crossed the log bridge, then began to untie my boots, in order to go back and get Shanghai across. She was gone. My immediate thought was that the previous crossing had been so horrid for her, that she had fled at the prospect of repeating it. I turned around to make sure my pack would be safe, while I went off to look for her. And there she sat, beside my pack, dripping wet. Can a dog show an expression of pride? She did.

As the years passed, she became progressively unable to hear my voice commands or see my hand signals. So she seemed to work at anticipating what I expected of her. Her little doggie brain accepted her limitations without sign of fretting or suffering. A life lesson for me.

Until she died, I had no idea of how profound a grief one could experience at the loss of a pet. I do miss that stinky old dog.

I don't care what anybody says. You look like a retired redneck Dog lover that likes to smell flowers.
Heh heh But you know how them dogs are, that aint blossoms and honeysuckles come out. We love them just the same.

How Dog Breeds are Related

This was just published, based on extensive genetic testing of about half of all recognized breeds. Most are no surprise, but some relationships are odd. Common genetic abnormalities are clustered by the clade (the color groups shown in the diagram).

Dog_phylogeneticTree.png

http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/04/where-did-your-dog-come-new-tree-breeds-may-hold-answer

The center of the diagram is about 15,000 to 30,000 years ago. Most of the breeds within a clade were created during the last 200 years or so.

Bob, I just discover this thread and noticed your post about your lost friend Shanghai, very touching story, I am sorry for your lost.
Pets are part of our families and history, it's always hard to loose such friends :(

It's always incredible to see how dogs love when you take care of them, if I say "on va se promener ?" ("have a walk ?") my dog always begin to jump and bark all around, shaking his tail happily !
Pets can be so lovely, they teach us life, humility, they help us focusing on simple things in life.
He is getting old now, he hears less and less, but he still do stupid things and he still knows how to lay is face on our knees, asking for love and care.

As I often say : animals are better than humans.

I scanned through the entire thread again today. A lot of happy dogs, bored cats and stone-faced lizards and rats.

Post your animal pics.

We live on a small farm. There's about 40+ acres here and a lot of it is pasture and woods. Currently we have 1 dog, 4 cats, a rabbit, and 5 horses.

Sam..walker hound/pitbull and his best friend Snowball
20160914_073337.jpg

Leo...5 month old...white terror. He is a youngster who recently lost his nuts. He hasn't noticed yet. He is an offspring of Snowball who lost his nuts soon after his affair with the neighbors cat.
20170130_135026.jpg

Stella Clair....A rescue cat from the pound in Columbus MS. She is the sweetest girl in the house. I hope my wife doesn't see this post.
20160629_231234.jpg

Cappy LaDonte is the oldest cat in the house. He is 6. This winter he got out and got lost. He was gone for 6weeks. A neighbor a mile away found our posts on facebook and he was returned to us. So glad to have him back.
20170328_204214.jpg

Apola....my shit machine. She provides some good old rabbit poop soup for my plants and garden. I got to find another doe to throw in there with her so I can get more shit. Best fertilizer on the farm. No seeds.

I'll throw in a few horse pictures here. Some of these may appear a bit skinny or in poor condition. We do horse rescue here. We are small time and can only have 4 rescues at once but a life saved is a life saved.

This is Sherlock but his name should be Houdini. We had to watch this guy because the grass on the other side of the fence looked much better and he would break out. One day we caught him on video crawling through the barbwire. He is in poor condition right now but by this fall he should be looking great. He will follow you all over the pasture like a dog. Loves attention...and carrots.
20170407_193119.jpg20170407_193111.jpg

Rio...another rescue but now he is looking good we have recently found a home for him and he should be gone soon.
20161031_120416.jpg

Lightning.....This guy is a pet. He will never leave here. His mother is here as well and she looks just like him.
20161220_122944.jpg

Summer...she is another rescue now in good shape. We have a new home for her and she should be leaving next month.
20161220_123036.jpg

As soon as these two mentioned above are gone we already have replacements for them. Folks just call and say they can't take care of their horse anymore. All we have to do is go pick them up. Some we have had have been so poor we were not sure they would make it but somehow they do. We haven't lost one yet. The other day we had a call come in about a horse blind in one eye that needs a home. I'm sure she will be the next one we pick up when Summer leaves next month.

Green monster, that is so beautiful. I like horses. Never had one. Riding only once but I would in next life.
Dogs and cats together are real feast for the eyes.
