Welcome to another Michiganian! I got 20/20/20 at the local Meijer. Just all purpose fertilizer in the gardening section. It's a little bit strong at times but it seems to work well if you do it easy. We'll see about the seeds, the YTB has a pretty small flower head so we'll see how many we get from it.

How tall did your Yellow Twist Bud get when it started to flower? My tobacco plants are doing well except for the YTB - they seem to be growing at a snail's pace.

maybe waist high at the tallest, small plants all around, I saved the largest one but not sure how viable the seed will be.

My ytb were slow at first but my best hit up to 5' with very large leaves. I bagged one and will probably have more consistant plants next year.

Personally, I'm more impressed with the Havana 142 and the Green brior. I'll be trying the Sumatra, Izmir Ozbas and a few others next year to see what I really like.

I'm already starting to plan for next year's plot. Trying to keep it down to 10 varieties - but I am having trouble deciding what to grow and what not to grow.

How did your Green Brior turnout? Were you able to sample some this early?

Turned out amazing! The tallest one hit 6'2" (that's the one I let go to flower) I also sliced some up of my first batch and threw it in the meerschaum pipe, tasted heavenly, very deep flavored tobacco.

Been a little while, everything is drying quite decently. The sucker growth is somewhat impressive, I'm not sure what to do with it all (maybe string it all on a fishing line and call it a mix). The green brior is just about ready to harvest the seed head.

The silk leaf is also coming to a second flowering head, odd but I may still harvest it.

I noticed that some plants produce suckers at different times than others. My Florida Sumatra was the first to produce suckers and they were plentiful. Some plants like my Italian Bright Leaf are just now beginning to sucker like hell. But my Yellow Orinoco and TN90 have produced very little suckering so far.

My plants are finally ready - I will harvest and begin air curing after Labor Day.

Jeremy, when our tobaccos are ready for smoking, we ought to get together and sample each others tobaccos.

My stage 1 harvest is done, The sucker stuff I'll harvest once it's a bit chillier outside.

For size comparison that tall stalk in the back (Greenbrior) is just shy of 6.5 feet.

The meet up sounds good Marco! I've been contemplating hosting a Great Lakes Tobacco Growers Meet or something of the like, if that falls through I'd still like to meet up and swap some plant!

New Pipes!

The fiance and I went anniversary shopping (dating anniversary) and stopped at a half dozen antique shops, I found a couple Meerschaum pipes. The one in the case is from ~1904 and the face is ~1940. The face smokes well, I lit some tobaccy up when I got home and tried her out!

If the dates on those are correct, you've got your hands on solid block turkish meerschaum, a fairly expensive thing these days. now most meerchaums are made of compressed meerschaum powder. same gig, but cheating since you can make molds and knock them out, instead of hand carving them. Cool find! Make sure not to build up a cake in those.

Turkey used to export some block meerschaum to pipe makers in other countries. Now that they no longer do that, you need to look for pipes actually made in Turkey.
