Hello to all

I grew my first tobacco ( Virginia) not sure what one. I air dried it. Been reading a lot over the past few months god there is a lot to learn. I’ve put it in sealable bags, the ones used to store clothes in the loft kept it moist and put it on lop of a wood stack in an inglenook next to the wood burner gets to about 45 ish degrees c up there will that ferment it ? Smells like honey or a sweat beer mash now ! Any advice is longed for cheers

Welcome. Thank you for joining us.

45 C is 113 F which is lower than that needed to inhibit mold growth. With the presence of moisture and humidity, mold is a possibility. When kilning, we try to maintain temps in the 125-128F range. (51.7- 53.3C) When you say moist, how moist? Here is a discussion of ”case” which we use to describe how moist or how dry.

Hi thank you for your reply it feels like leather and maybe the temp is higher at times. The fire is only on for about 12-14 hours a day so the temp goes down over night and back up in the afternoon evening. I change the leaf lay out around every few days to a week it’s been in there since October. I haven’t noticed any mould at all. I put a small bag of the leaf from the top of the plant up there about 2 weeks ago that was wet and it smelt like wet dog so I dried it down!! Smelling good now

So the temp over 50 c is to stop mould ? Lower will still ferment it ? I roll the bag so no condensation it’s packed tight with little to no air, is that good ?

Hi New Boy,

The tobacco seed co is in Essex. The owner of this forum and wholeleaftobacco.com is in Ohio. I grow seed for tobaccoseed.co.uk and several other companies. I'm not sure what strain they are calling Virginia #1. If you email them and ask, they will probably tell you. Not sure what "Samsung Burley" is either. Samsun is an oriental strain and one of my favorites. All the other strains you mentioned came from me. My wife was from Norwich and she helped grow them all. UK city girl who married a crazy yank and became a farmer. So it's kind of like the seeds are back home now. That should help them grow all the better. Start them around the first or second week of March and you should be good for planting 8 weeks later. :)

I live about an hour from Norwich thanks fo the advice it’s Turkish Samsung. And it said the Harrow velvet was like a burley. So I’m growing your seeds from Ohio any advice very welcome especially as the weather differences here in uk. Last year I was late to sow and near the end had wind which did some damage . I’ve seen pictures where the earth is banked up round the plant like potatoes is this a good idea ?

Good to hear it sounded good said it is a mild burley. Had to choose so went for a mixture of seeds give me some choices to blend. A friend of mines son grew tobacco last year for the first time so got in touch to see if we could swap some but he grew Virginia as well !!

I smoke condor original ready rubbed pipe tobacco some times. I looked up the leaf content and it says pure Virginia blend 100% Virginia! Any idea how they get that flavour from just Virginia leaf ?

Welcome from me in NZ. I wouldn't bother mounding your plants. I live on a piece of land with the ocean on both sides of my house, so plenty of wind. I just stake my plants and use wind break netting. It works well for me.

A lot of us would like to know that too! It’s their secret “Lakeland sauce” used to case and top the tobacco. Welcome To the forum.

Yes. I think the problem here is no wind for months the 3 day storm so they are not hardened to it !
