We ended up being to late to plant our vegetables other than corn and come melons but next year we want to try the onion companion planting with tobacco for sure otherwise all I could think to seed was clover so that’s what’s sprouting around them

We’ve already learned slot from this years mistakes and planning better for next year for sure so not to lose as many plants and hopefully get a good amount of usable leaf as well as seeds. Next year we’re going to seed direct in the ground in half the field and the other half will be float tray transplants. We want to see the labor difference and yield difference between plants that are started in ground and thinned in ground to one plant per sight. Compared to planting and thinning and transplanting trays. We dunno what to expect other than a lot of seed death and a lot of thinning to do as they are able to be thinned, I think the plants will be shorter and lower yielding from the direct seed to ground but I wouldn’t actually have any frame of reference. I appreciate all everyone here and all the advice that’s been given so far ❤️

That may work well in the endless summer of Oregon. If that's not your climate, then you lose 2 months of the growing season by direct seeding (after last frost).

Bob
Ya I usually plant mid March in greenhouse that’s warm and my plants get huge and produce seeds very well but our greenhouse was crushed by snow last winter hahah!! I feel like trays will be easier less squatting in the field lol

So I don’t know if the genetics are true on either the Sampson or the lizard tail Orinoco. The “Sampson” was an unlabeled container in my drawer that could either be Sampson or Virginia gold . But both seed types I baught online and can’t remember from where lol. The lizard tail Orinoco I baught online this year from eBay or something like that so not like a reputable seed vendor or gene bank. If anyone here thinks they look like true genetics or if anyone thinks they look like something else please chime in ❤️

The Samsun looks correct. Heart shaped leaf with a lamina-free petiole. The spelling, "Samsun", comes from the name of the city on the Black Sea Coast of Turkey:

So there’s a bunch of sucker branches on the sampsun leaf and the 5 rows of lizard tail Orinoco are getting a bit bigger sense Transplanted. I’m not sure if any of the sampsun leaf is ready to pick or if I should clip the sucker branches at this point sense they all have decent sized leafs on there branches. Might try to salvage the leafs on the branches if we do clip them cus they seem like there good enough size to thread on a string but I don’t know if the leaf would even be desired after drying and aging . Otherwise I’m hoping the sampsun make seeds if not the Orinoco. And I’m wondering should I bag flower heads if they don’t go into flower at the same time? It should I not worry about it because I read something saying there’s rarely cross pollination between variety of tobacco due to them completing pollination before there flower opens but I don’t know how true that is still learning. Definitely excited about this though new experience for our family for sure.

If you expect pure variety seed from tobacco, you must bag the blossom head before the blossoms open. You need to bag only one plant of each variety.

Bob
Oh thank you for that advice I wasn’t sure so I’ll probably only save seed from one of each and make sure to bag them, so do those Turkish tobaccos look like some of the bottom leaf is ready to pick and hang to you? I don’t wanna go past there point of ripeness from what I’ve read it’s also undesirable to pick them to soon as well.

Been thinning out the clover that’s around the lizard tail Orinoco tobaccos and I’m so greatful we laid out clover because I usually would need to spray for bugs but this clover has been acting as a trap plant of sorts. This was not my original intention I actually only wanted some kind of nitrogen fixing helper or a bug repellent helper but seems the clover is preferred over the tobacco and the squash beetles and other bugs just munch on the clover thankfully. This method I wouldn’t recommend to a commercial operation unless they found a way to streamline it and use short clover apposed to this crimson clover. I see that there’s been some light drowning happening in some that are smaller than the bulk of the ones that I’ve thinned more thoroughly which I think stunted there growth. Other than that the plants seem to like clover as a near by neighbor but not to nearby. There’s a tick problem in the field so we sprayed the areas we don’t have crops in the field with pyrethrins so I’m researching if that was a bad idea of if it should be ok. There’s still no official flower bud sights yet on the Black Sea sampsun however they are stretching and making plenty of new growth on both sucker branch leaves and the original older leaves. The top new leaves are looking a bit more symmetrical and healthier so I’m wondering if starting them under light emitting ceramic grow lights might have been a strange switch from that with perfect temperatures indoors to being put outside and hardened off at to young of age maybe? Anyway here’s today’s pictures ❤️
