Im new to the New Zealand tobacco thing, haven’t thought much of it until I wanted to get back into cigars until I found what they are marketed at. I grew up in Ohio and remember tobacco farms not far from where I lived. Hamilton being not too far off the Ohio climate I decided to look into growing some tobacco myself. Most of the seeds I found seems to be primarily for pipe and cigarette and the google AI suggested this forum to seek out more information. I was hoping I could buy some seeds from someone here. Im looking for something I can pot and pull into the garage over nights in the winter when Hamilton frosts. Maybe one plant that’s good for both filling and wrapping until I get the hang of it. The Havana 142 looks nice but that’s google AI and I don’t trust it. Any help would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. Read the New Growers' FAQ, linked in the menu bar. You may wish to scan through the topics in our Index of Key Forum Threads, also linked in the menu bar.

Most cigar filler varieties will produce some leaf nice enough for wrappers and fillers. CT Shade makes poor filler. I've rolled many puros from just Corojo 99. Comstock Spanish and Zimmer Spanish were both grown in Ohio until recently, and can produce filler and dark, oily wrappers.

You will need to determine if you can import tobacco seed to New Zealand.

Thank you very much bob, I thought this was a New Zealand forum. I should have done more research.
