The next batch of Soil blocks I make will be a Peat Lite type
The idea stems from http://fairtradetobacco.com/showthread.php?2532-US-Nicotiana-Germplasm-Collection-2013-Nursery/page2
Post #12
Here is a PDF on making a mix http://www.vermiculite.org/pdf_word/peatlite.pdf
.
Was none to happy bout the camera melting but on the up side it forced me to find a better set up.

Made up more Soil cubes today am gambling a little I think thou...
12 cups Sphagnum Moss
6 cups Vermiculite
1 heavy Table Spoon Blood Meal
2 Table Spoons Bone Meal
When mixing it must be pretty wet to form the cube, they are light and loose so you have to be gentle with them. Makes about 104 round cubes 1 1/2 inches X 2 1/4 inches tall.
Am hoping it doesn't burn em think I'll test a few
The last 8 germination cups came out of the chamber today, they germinated 3 days ago and have not had many new ones start from than. I question seedman seeds.
Compared to to ARS-GRIN they don't do well............

It was like the feeling you had when your camera melted. Makes me want a new rig :)

Mine will never make really good videos but is ok for just looking. Yours ..... man is one sweet setup
And nothing rude in your sharing at all and well appreciated here too

Test sprouts have been in mix from post #144 something like 36 hours and look good. I guess the fertilizer I added is OK.
Pics of 3 days in the soil cube, 6 days in the soil cube and sprouts in the germination cup. Those in the cup are way behind those in the cube.

For the mix I think I'll add sand and a moss to make it more stable, still thinking about it. But will do something today I must move the sprouts of remaining strains.

Wow. Great honor. You've just received the ChickenHawk seal of approval! That's the equivalent of a Nobel Prize around here.

Am Honored!
The Miracle Gro mix is doing pretty dam good, but want to get away from it. Is why I am trying to make my own, in looking at the new cubes this morning they are not going to hold up. So am going back to the drawing board the seedlings in them can stay put while I make a new batch. What I am trying to do is make it really light and loose witch is proving to be a challenge being there is no container. I'll try adding some compost and see where that goes. Will be a busy day many of the seedlings in the Miracle Gro cubes have six leaves now so will need to cull these. Those in start trays that were germinated where they grow are baffling some are doing well while others are growing very little don't understand this. I do know I won't do it in start trays next year.
.
Was a bit disappointed to learn the meaning of TI being all from grin fall in this group will be very interesting to see how they grow & smoke! With the exception of one strain (PI 378076 TI 1554 A-56-N) it is slow while the others are going like mad. I have enough for my row but germination rate was low. The funny thing in the start tray some germinated but cups in the chamber -0- germinated. This was true with 2 other strains as well.
.
Will not get seed from SeedMan again those as far as number of seed to number germinated showed poorly.

The trays I did for the soil cubes and the cup in them is for adding water so I don't erode the base of cubes close by.
Am tickled to death with them was so worried I would not have or have only a handful to put in the patch.
Good looking plants. I like the trays too.

Hi mate, some beauty wee plants you got goin there man.
I have a worm farm and fed them a mates hair a while back, where the hair is holds together quite well even after the worms have had a go. Short hair clippings could help hold your blocks together like plaster of old.
Well keen to see if these work, like Bigbonners system I like the ease.

Hey Webby how ya doing?
Say man that hair sounds like a good Idea cept is hard to come by here less I shave the dogs...
But maybe hemp rope fibers? Got me thinking now!

I really like the cubes when ready I can just plunk em in the ground the plants are doing well in them too. I can almost watch them grow.

The next batch of Cubes well be made tomorrow ran out of time today going to use two types of compost in the mix one is chicken sheet,,, Mr. Chicken will like that!
