The patch today
.
patch sept 13.JPG

Still have a few more weeks of prime and cure, lots of yellow ripe leaf in the photo.
Should finish priming and curing last week of this month 1st week of November. I think I'll end up with about 60 pounds of tobacco..

It is ready for sure. How many plants to get 60#?
Turkish throws it off because there's less poundage per plant but for American varieties I'd say 120 plants might get you to 60 pounds depending on how ripe the leaves are when picked.

Half a pound per plant? That's good. I was thinking more on the line of 4 oz per plant.
I've read the 4 oz per plant thing, too. I've also read that commercial growers top so that they end up with 16 leaves, but a lot of my plants have up to 25 leaves. And the commercial growers don't prime lugs either, so that may account for it too. I'm planning on doing a lot more weighing this year now that I have a scale. I would also like to know how many plants to plant to get x number of pounds.

i have all mine in except for about onehalf of the sucker crop and i really wan't to get the rest in and cured so i can see how i did. the green worms are starting to bother my plants now so i have been hand picking them because i don't wan't to spray this close to the last harvest. it's easy to see which plants have them but still hard to find them sometimes. i would think they would be a lot bigger with the amount they can eat in a night or two. i have got to get my camera back from my son so i can take pictures next year.

Yep seems I lost October
I grew 248 plants 35 of the Turkish Type and I pulled 4 plants due to sickness and 2 that had heavy Aphid infestation.
I'd say I'm getting in the area of 1/4 pound a plant - dry leaf - I have not picked many of the lugs.
I am guessing about the 60 pounds half the patch is harvested and I have 20 pounds cured dry leaf with a batch curing. The batch curing should give me about another 10 pounds dry leaf.
If I have no loss when I take it out.
My first batch I lost 50% and second batch about 10%. The 3rd and 4th batches I had -0- loss. (Am learning how to cure)
When I am done I'll count up the total pounds and see what I actually end up with.

I just weighed a hand of Bright Leaf in medium case that had 17 leaves in it and it came out to 205g. So I think two plants could easily produce a pound. It probably would have weighed significantly less if it were bone dry, however.

At the end of this exercise you can do a "Cost/pound" analysis. Even with your start up costs the number should compete favorably with commercially priced trash. Next year with all your equipment ready to go your cost should shrink substantially. Best of luck.

You'll still come way out ahead from growing your own. I can sit back next year and just grow a fraction of what I grew the last 2 years and still maintain an 8-10 year supply. with a few specialty purchases here and there. I can't seem to match BigBonners and WLT'S tobaccos.

Sorry Tim, I disagree. For binder or wrapper your Havana 425 is Superior. I don't believe anyone could easily find better.

Thanks John, those seeds came from Tomintennesse. I haven't seen him on in quite a while. I may grow some more next year, The first year I didn't care for it but a little ageing did wonders.

Got all my seed in, the patch is looking bleak after priming to day I think I have 3 to 4 loads left.
Horn Worms liked the Big Gold had a few leaves they munched on pretty well. That row is bare stalks now.
Trying to decide who will get primed next....

Of what was grown this year two I will grow again for sure. The first African Red it produces well, cures nice, and taste great. The second A-56-N is slow growing (till mid season than takes off) matures later than the others,
Whole leaf will Yellow before it is 100% mature, and cures well turns deep Gold. Don't know what it taste like yet...
I liked the Kutsaga 110 cures well, taste is mild and soft, it is very smooth. Need to age it before I know if I will grow it again. The Kutsaga E-2 I have not touched yet leaves are heavy and dark green with yellow spots the size of a dime to a quarter, I am wondering how it will cure. The leaves are also quite large I suspect it will be strong and robust.
