Another New Beginning

My grow for 2014 is now set in stone (sort of).

Garden_Layout2014.jpg

My initial challenge will be finding sufficient protected space for rearing all the seedlings.

Amarillo Parado
Bolivia Criollo Black
Colombian Garcia
CT Broadleaf
Djebel 174
FL Sumatra
Hacienda del Cura
Harrow Velvet
Little Dutch
Long Red
Macchu Picchu
Magnolia
Metacomet
PA Red
PA Swarr-Hibshman (GRIN)
PA Swarr-Hibshman (NP)
Prilep P66-9/7
Shirazi
Swarr-Hibshman (GRIN)
Timor
VA Bright
Vuelta Abajo
Xanthi Yaka 18A

The plant numbers and even the varieties may change, depending on germination and seedling results.

Providing a safety margin for each of the 23 varieties will require for 256 plants the production of 358 seedlings. That will require 8 flats of 48-cell 1020 trays.

The Shirazi is probably the least definite variety (should another tempting candidate appear), since I found Shirazi to be somewhat difficult to color-cure in the past.

I'll be growing 3 versions of Swarr-Hibshman cigar filler. One is from the Nicotiana Project donation. The other two are from Jessica at GRIN. The goal is to see if these three differ in any discernible way.

I always set up an Excel spreadsheet for each year's grow. The varieties run across the top, and I record the following information for each:

Variety
Plant length Untopped (to crowfoot) - cm/in
Plant length Topped - cm/in
Leaf length (length of 10th leaf from bottom, at maturity) - cm/in
Leaf width (width of 10th leaf from bottom, at maturity) - cm/in
Leaf number topped (exclude 2 bed leaves)
Days at maturity (transplant to 50% plants 1 flower)§
Plant form (pyramidal, columnar, inverted cone, other)
Flower color (white, pink, red, other)
Flower head habit (closed, intermediate, open)
Leaf attachment (sessile, petiolate)
Leaf carriage of midrib (arched, not arched)
Leaf color (light green, green, dark green)
Leaf margin (wavy, not wavy)
Leaf angle (upper angle between stalk and 10th leaf) - degrees
Leaf margin (recurved, not recurved)
Leaf surface (smooth, puckered)
Stalk diameter - cm/in
Tip shape (e.g. acute, acuminate, obtuse.)
Venation patern (square, angular)
Yield (cured weight) - grams per plant/lbs
*Stalk fringe configuration
*Spacing - sq. ft. per plant
*Air Cured Color (leaf)
*Air Cured Character
*Wt. Dried Seed - g/oz per plant
*Variety Comment
*transplant date
*bagging date

The printout of the empty sheet usually runs about 4 or 5 pages (landscape). During the season, I write on the printout, then eventually transfer the info to the live spreadsheet for keeping. While the measurements are handy, the lengthy "Variety Comment" is often the most useful material. Most of the data points are identical to GRIN. Those with a leading asterisk are not in GRIN.

If any member is interested in the actual blank spreadsheet for your own use, PM your email address, and I'll return a copy as an email attachment. You will need Excel to use it.

Measured at 7:47 am Jan 7, 2014.

Strange weather. Wobbling polar vortex. Should be an interesting year.

I always set up an Excel spreadsheet for each year's grow.

When I become dictator I am going to outlaw Excel.

Southern Planter at job interviews:

HR Person: "I see Mr Planter that you have twelve PHDs, speak seventy five languages and have thirty years experience in the industry. Do you know Excel?"

Me: "Excel is for ninnies."

HR Person: "Next!"

Booger Eating Moron: "Drool"

HR Person: "State education and experience."

Booger Eating Moron: "Duh, I flunked eighth grade and got fired at McDonald's after just a week."

HR Person: "Do you know Excel?"

Booger Eating Moron: "Yup"

HR Person: "You're hired!"

Seriously though, I do the same kind of garden planning, but on a large drafting table using a drafting machine, German silver dipping pens with india ink, french curves and what not. The wife just roles her eyes.

Modernity may threaten one's self-image of authenticity. Excel is a tool that saves me time, and is transportable by email.

After a few days of high humidity and rain, I was able today to move more leaf from the shed, in preparation for kilning it. Only about 6 strings of tobacco left hanging there (though a lot more still hanging in the back porch). One large string of Sacred Cornplanter (2012) is still trying to finish coloring--maybe next year.

Once the weather warms up, and the humidity inside the house climbs, I can start working at all the indoor-hanging leaf.

Mid-stalk leaf from Bolivia Criollo Black is now nicely smokable (in a pipe) without kilning. It's been in the shed until today.

Calm Before the Storm

Garden20140218_1116_entireGarden_snow_700.jpg

I'll be starting my seed in a couple of weeks. I made a trek (roads still crappy) to Lowe's yesterday, to pick up several bags of Miracle Gro Sphagnum Peat Moss. I've found that they don't stock much, sell out before mid March, and don't restock until way too late. This will be mixed 3 parts to 1 part each of Pearlite and Vermiculite for all my seed-starting needs.

Never again will I be stuck with trying to grow seedlings in "Organic Coir" or other unsatisfactory media. Starting 350+ seedlings requires too much labor to fart around with stuff that I've proven to myself just doesn't work.

The next big chore for me is marking varieties on the 90 or so Popsicle sticks that will go into the 1020 tray inserts, plus another 24 for the seed starting cups. I buy these by the box every 3 or 4 years at Walmart. My trays and inserts were ordered and received in January.

I'm ready to go.

Good stuff. Any new "exotic" varieties this year? Look forward to following your grow.
