Another New Beginning
My grow for 2014 is now set in stone (sort of).
My initial challenge will be finding sufficient protected space for rearing all the seedlings.

The plant numbers and even the varieties may change, depending on germination and seedling results.
Providing a safety margin for each of the 23 varieties will require for 256 plants the production of 358 seedlings. That will require 8 flats of 48-cell 1020 trays.
The Shirazi is probably the least definite variety (should another tempting candidate appear), since I found Shirazi to be somewhat difficult to color-cure in the past.
I'll be growing 3 versions of Swarr-Hibshman cigar filler. One is from the Nicotiana Project donation. The other two are from Jessica at GRIN. The goal is to see if these three differ in any discernible way.
I always set up an Excel spreadsheet for each year's grow. The varieties run across the top, and I record the following information for each:
Variety
Plant length Untopped (to crowfoot) - cm/in
Plant length Topped - cm/in
Leaf length (length of 10th leaf from bottom, at maturity) - cm/in
Leaf width (width of 10th leaf from bottom, at maturity) - cm/in
Leaf number topped (exclude 2 bed leaves)
Days at maturity (transplant to 50% plants 1 flower)§
Plant form (pyramidal, columnar, inverted cone, other)
Flower color (white, pink, red, other)
Flower head habit (closed, intermediate, open)
Leaf attachment (sessile, petiolate)
Leaf carriage of midrib (arched, not arched)
Leaf color (light green, green, dark green)
Leaf margin (wavy, not wavy)
Leaf angle (upper angle between stalk and 10th leaf) - degrees
Leaf margin (recurved, not recurved)
Leaf surface (smooth, puckered)
Stalk diameter - cm/in
Tip shape (e.g. acute, acuminate, obtuse.)
Venation patern (square, angular)
Yield (cured weight) - grams per plant/lbs
*Stalk fringe configuration
*Spacing - sq. ft. per plant
*Air Cured Color (leaf)
*Air Cured Character
*Wt. Dried Seed - g/oz per plant
*Variety Comment
*transplant date
*bagging date
The printout of the empty sheet usually runs about 4 or 5 pages (landscape). During the season, I write on the printout, then eventually transfer the info to the live spreadsheet for keeping. While the measurements are handy, the lengthy "Variety Comment" is often the most useful material. Most of the data points are identical to GRIN. Those with a leading asterisk are not in GRIN.
If any member is interested in the actual blank spreadsheet for your own use, PM your email address, and I'll return a copy as an email attachment. You will need Excel to use it.
