I stalk-cut this yesterday afternoon. In this location, it will be exposed to direct sunlight for about 5 hours each morning.

Because it is suspended on a large hook by a nail (with its identification tag of Tyvek) driven into the base of the stalk, I worried that a gust of wind might dislodge it from the hook. As added security, I anchored a small loop of wire to the nail, and slipped that loop over the hook. I usually don't need a nail for the slender Prilep stalks, but this one was 1-inch thick at its base.

My volunteer tobacco plant still shows no sign of budding. I suspect that the weather patterns have been a bit fickle in the seasonal signals they provide. And the plant doesn't seem to care about changes in the 24-hour day/night periods. My intention is to just sit back, and see what this does.

This Praying Mantis has been spending the last couple of days on my front porch. It appears to be about 3½ inches long. It watches me, but seems perfectly comfortable with my comings and goings, and ignores my cigar smoke. When slowly moving from one spot to another, the Praying Mantis uses a wobbling gait, so that it looks like a brown willow leaf shifting in a slight breeze. What I find most peculiar, and unlike other insects, is that when I look at it, it turns its head and looks back at me.

At about 4pm this afternoon, while sitting at the computer in my study, I noticed that all of the knuckles in both my hands suddenly felt swollen and stiff. I went to the AccuWeather 10-day graph.

The barometric pressure had abruptly dropped. By about 6pm, I noticed that all those knuckles felt better, though still somewhat stiff. I've observed this in the past, but not quite so suddenly, nor with an immediate view of the pressure graph. My impression is that the joint swelling occurs only when the pressure drops rapidly, and not when the pressure rises rapidly.

That's Colorado
Temp at ~7:30 this morning:

It bottomed out at 4.5°F. (I'm one of the lucky ones. Parts of Colorado hit actual temperatures of -41°F [-40.5°C] overnight.) I've had my faucets dripping for several days now. So far, no burst pipes.

I will not be smoking a cigar out on my front porch. Just a pipe in the study.

That was a cold month. Hopefully it'll be warmer in Longmont this year.

As recently as two weeks ago, the 14-day weather forecast predicted above freezing temps beyond the end of October. As usual, the forecast wiggled and changed, day by day.

As of yesterday, I had 3 nights of temps as low as 29°F. My volunteer plant showed frost damage on the leaves farthest from the nearby house foundation. This morning, I awoke to 23°F. The sun has not yet revealed the full damage to the plant. Since this was an unknown volunteer, and I had decided to just let it do whatever it did, I am not concerned about the damage (perhaps fatal) to that plant. If it had matured, I would have stalk-harvested it, and then seen how it fared in the shed during subsequent freezing weather. This unfortunate volunteer had not yet even formed a bud head.
