Morning gents , this spring i hauled out my probably considered vintage seed collection to get back to growing tobacco . Most of the seed id acrued by grace of members semding me samples, im fairly sure are no longer viable. Made a few attempts but no grow. The ones i had at least better luck with were the ones id grown out to seed harvest back in Illinois.
Virginia 116, is most advanced got a few leaves the size of dimes
Little Dutch, still very small but looking decent
Havana 142 , same as LD
Criollo 98 , nice flush of tiny sprouts, i count at least 2 dz
Japan 8, got 2 sprouts , hoping theyll make it to seed .
And special mention to Perique , have 6 sprouts currently , a couple are barely visible . Not sure how i acquired these, Big Bonner perhaps since he gave me some of his processed as pipe tobacco many years ago which im ever so slowly enjoying in mixtures here and there.
Any helpful ideas on how to revive old seed into germinating. Im sure most of the issue is poor storage on my part, just the tiny ziplock bags, packed in another, and stored in a sealed tub until recently. Seems the first part of my list took way longer to germinate than 10 yrs ago, which would have been a week , now seems to take at least 3 weeks to 2 months time. Sowed in late February in the basement under lights on heat mats, first round went terribly. Second round, went better but a few didnt survive past the emergent seedling stage. Thought about maybe trying a short soak in hydrogen peroxide and paper towel method .
