I finally got some much needed rain last night. It hasn't rained since the night I planted the patch, 4-24. It should have been enough to wash in my 13-13-13 fertilizer. Most of the growth is still underground.

An average VA 355 Dark Air plant. Some bigger, some smaller. I have one row of 48 plants.

An average MD609 Maryland plant. One row of 48 plants.

I'll post a few pictures of my seed grow out varieties as they get some more size on them. On average, they're about even with the MD609 and VA355, although many are taller.

Those are some awesome looking plants ,Knuck!

Nice leaf comparison too. That MD609 looks like good wrapper leaf...nice and smooth. How old are those plants ??

They were seeded Feb. 20 and planted into the patch April 24. Some folks use Maryland as a condiment filler in cigars, but I'm not sure it would have the mouth taste you would want for a wrapper. It has medium strength as a filler. The leaf itself would make a great wrapper, huge, stretchy leaves. It's the wrapper flavor I would wonder about.

Yeah, the two outside rows are spaced at two feet apart. The middle row of seed grow out varieties are spaced even tighter. Maybe 16 inches. I can get away with it due to the eight foot row spacing.

The patch at one month after planting. I tilled under the grass and weeds that had come up between the rows. I'll use the stirrup hoe to get the little stuff between the plants. The next several days have a high chance of rain. I could use some.

That is a nice looking patch.
They are taking off now, I feel a lot of satisfaction when they take off.
I hope I'll see a little Jet Fuel firing under mine in the next week.

Looking good. The Kavala is interesting, leaves shaped like Izmir but denser/closer spacing.

Looking good Wallace...if you get half the rain we are/were getting lately, you have nothing to worry about...

Kavala seeds/seedlings seem to be really good at being survivors. Your patch of tobacco looks real good, congrats Knucklehead.

You may look at this specific thread about Kavala. I hope you'll find it helpful.

The patch as of this morning. Maryland 609 on the left, seed grow out varieties in the middle, VA 355 Dark Air on the right.

Izmir Incekara is budding. I bagged two this morning. My dufus puppy had run over the one on the far left while I was preparing to take the picture. He knocked over the plant and broke the top out of it. I think he was chasing baby banshees. (My wife said "NO!!" when I asked if I could have a pet banshee ;)) I'll stake it back up today. They're about 3' tall. Total of four plants.

My No. 3666 Deli cigar wrapper variety is also budding. It got a couple of bags yesterday. 3.5 - 4' tall. Total of four plants.

For some reason, I was thinking the No. 3666 Deli, which I am also growing, was wrapper--not that the distinction is really meaningful. In the back of my mind, I was assuming that the 3666 Deli would be as tall as my Besuki from last year--very tall.

Your plants appear to be healthy and happy, even with that cute little yellow "Top" mahjong tile resting on the leaves.

You are right, No. 3666 Deli is classed as wrapper. I edited my post. Thanks.

It does seem that they are budding early. A couple of other cigar varieties are showing buds on a couple of plants. Rain, cloudy days, too much fertilizer overlap in some areas, I'm not sure which is the culprit. Luckily it is only happening on varieties being grown for seed so far.
