Good tuesday fellas, finally got some much needed rain here in north alabama. Weve been close to almost 6 inches behind all year. So, to take advantage of having some garden time off, a long period of rain and the humidity that comes with it...i checked my tobacco seedlings, the biggest so far Va116 is in 2nd pr of leaves. Largest leaf is size of a quarter. Little Dutch coming in 2nd, much smaller but looking happy. The 2 dz Criollo98's i "up potted" over the weekend, are still standing slightly bigger but i sure dont remember tobacco being so slow to grow to planting out size. Still progress is progress. Im older and slower these days too,lol. Time for my morning pipe and coffee.
i went out to my shop and took a couple of the sealed tubs down of what is now 12 year old tobacco that which i grew in Illinois. Been up on the high shelf where it gets fairly hot in summer but cold as far down as teens in winter. Aging with the seasons like whiskey in oak barrels in barrelhouses was the intent.
Specifically, the varieties i brought out.
Little Sweet Orinoko (LSO)
Black Mammoth (BM)
Madole (Mad)
Va Red (VaR)
Long Red (LR)
and Virginia Gold (VG)
Tubs and Bags been sealed tight for a couple years now. I open them up about every 2 yrs to check aging , and on days such as today , i let them breathe seal back up to long rest again. Still a hint of ammonia first breath on a couple bags b
but not as heavy as 4 yrs ago when it about knocked me out. theres most definitely a sweet earthiness developing here, hint of dry cocoa there, fruity, light citrus possibly, sweet grassy in the VG . I have them open to absorb some humidity . Zero mold, the sealed tubs and vapor proof bags have done a great job.
I have an idea today to cavendish a few bunches of these aged leaves in a pressure pot i use to pressure can in. In jars , loosely lidded , water just an inch , ill start off at 3 hours and see how or if it affects anything.
My Plan is to press some flake afterwards . Not necessarily all of my list but in one combination or another . Might just cav them all separately in their own respective jars , and blend later once i get an individual aroma and flavor of each. press the VG as a straight navy flake .
What would you do with what i have here. ?
