I think it was a ladybug or similar beetle - that looks very like the case they leave behind when they have finished pupating - kind of firmly attached to the leaf but empty and papery? I caught my adult 7 spot ladybirds coming out of the cases which they just leave behind. Your variety had different colouration so there are differences.

I like the rack system. But I wonder if leaf shrinkage will cause a lot of tearing around the spears, since more than one go throuh each leaf.

Did some work in the patch, suckering, Mission Horn Worm, found a bud worm. Got 2 plants in the whole patch side by side with Aphids, been trying to kill em more than 2 weeks but gave up today. Looked around an thought I got plenty....
than removed the plants before they spread 1 sure way to beat an Aphid relocate his house.

i had aphids on four plants and have been screwing with them for weeks. i harvested almost all the rest of the tobacco plants yesterday and sprayed the heack out of everything this morning hopefully before they attack my sucker plants while they are still small. some of them are growing unbelivably fast. some have been growing for less than a week and are over a foot and a half tall. it's almost like magic. i can't wait to see what will happen when i hit them with nitrogen and trace minerals. the race is on to see if i can get them to ripen before the show is over for the year.

I've been having a devil of a time with aphids also. The spray is killing them, but within a week there are more of them. It's taking me about six hours to throroughly spray every plant in the patch. I spread it out over three evenings. I want to get some Admire like BigBonner uses for next year, but heard somewhere on here that you have to have a license to buy it. Is this for sure?

Knucks look on the web. You can buy anything on here. My parents have been buying (license only) argentine ant poison for years. I have had three plants get hit hard by red aphids and white flies once, but after one application of Cyonara they turn black and haven't come back.

That's what he said, I'm looking for the post, in that thread some one also posted what's involved in getting the license.
The posts might of been when I was complaining about my aphid problem I had in last years grow. (still looking for post)
I'd like to use Admire also, if you can find some, (with no license) PM me. Please!
I'd love to make my aphid problem a thing of the past.

I believe there are generic forms of Admire that can be bought off the shelf in stores like Southern States and Family Farm & Tractor...
I could be wrong.
I used it in my patch but used it late plants had been in a few weeks. Although I have seen some Aphids here and there, there were not many and they would disappear after a bit.
I did have 2 plants that were literally ravaged by them (I think I may have missed the Admire on them) even though I sprayed them with soap etc. weeks ago. I am priming now so
I don't want to put anything on my Tobacco the two plants I removed to keep the Aphids from spreading I hope. This is why I went Horn Worm hunting and removed more than 8 less then 14.

If you have any BT, it's a good idea to spray your bud heads before bagging just to be on the safe side. If you bag a bud worm they'll eat the whole bud head.

I've got a license, but around here, if you try to buy some, you have to buy a case or two, which runs mulitple hundreds of dollars. The amounts of Admire used around here is zilch, so I would have to buy the minimum shipped amount for the cooperative. The license requires filling out a few forms and taking a farming test calculating the spraying amounts and quanities.

I got "Nuprid" from a friend. It requires extreme dilution and worked fine for me. I don't know if it requires a pesticide license or not. I used it at the extreme low end of dilution and it worked fine this year. It is my understanding that a pesticide license is not hard or expensive to get. It is supposed to give 60 days of protection and has always lasted longer than that for me. Bottom line -- NO aphids this year.

and that alone is a very good reason to steer clear of it like the plague until it's been proven innocent ... If we lose the bees we're going to be shafted for every fruit crop that needs pollination.
