wow you guys are busy bees! because the germplasm collection has changed hands several times in the past 10 years, there hasn't been much interest in aquiring new additions other than a couple of registered lines (poquonock, metacomet, etc). truth be told, my boss is more interested in decreasing the size of the collection than growing it and i will be working later this year on duplicate removal and some reorganization. in his defense, he was never in favor of having to be involved with the germplasm collection, but he aqcuiesced when there were no other options available. while i am excited that a number of you wish to assist, the collection has always done all of its seed increases in house to ensure purity and identity. we grow out 250 accessions each year in the field and we cycle back to the beginning in 9 years time such that no seed is ever older than 10 years (we store them in the cold so there is no significant drop in viability over that time frame).

however, that being said, we generally do harvest way more seed than we end up keeping for each line. i would be willing to offer up our excess to your seed bank such that you could then share it with interested members. i think this sort of partnership would be mutually beneficial as you would have access to vastly more germplasm resources with limited efforts and it doesn't require any additional efforts on our end. in time, your members will be able to access most of the germplasm collection via FTT and decrease their GRIN requests. i say "most" because there are a number of lines which do not readily set seed in the field, as well as species, mutants and hybrids.

my boss ...he was never in favor of having to be involved with the germplasm collection....

I've spoken with Dr. L in the past. He seemed unhappy with that responsibility. But having also read some of his research publications, I'm sure that he values the germplasm collection.

Your offer of "surplus" seed is exciting. When you get a moment during the summer, if you can PM me with a list of your variety grow-outs for this year, I can let you know which ones would be unique additions to our FTT seed collection. I would be happy to pay the shipping cost for such seed.

There are a couple of ways to extract data from GRIN that may not be apparent.

1) To get the accessions or passport data you can download an entire genus in the FAO MCPD (Multicrop Passport Descriptor format). The link is at:

http://www.ars-grin.gov/~dbmuqs/cgi-bin/mcpd_gen.pl

2) To extract the evaluation and descriptor data for many of the accessions you should do the following:

a) go to the TOBACCO crop page and select the middle query 'using version of short form with expanded..'
http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/crop.pl?81
b) on the search page select the left checkbox for CLASS
c) on the popup select '>=' for the operator and BU for Burley
d) 1553 accessions should be selected. Use the right checkboxes on any other descriptor you want in the report or download

Don,
I think that idea may be a challenge. The entire list (without the accession details) will be mostly meaningless, and will be so long that it will make the forum page less than user friendly. I would suggest instead that interested members simply explore ARS-GRIN and post their desires in a dedicated (i.e. chatter-free) thread. Then we can have an eager volunteer (I nominate Knucklehead.) do the math, and make up a final list.

By the way, the first link is organized by class, I also did the following in location, PI number and name.

View attachment 5321
View attachment 5322

If anyone needs/wants these printed out I can do so for you. (small cost to get them to you)

this is really nice but some of the GRIN info is wrong, that is, unless Quinn found my old file of changes i wanted to make. i'll follow up with him to see if they were ever implemented and if not i'll make the changes myself when the new GRIN-Global system goes live later this year and i figure out how to get it set up and use it. there are some changes to crucial information like PI#s and names, but i doubt that those changes affect very many of the cultivar accessions that FTT members seem to be most interested in.
