So today it happened , a batch of 303 grams ( roughly 10 oz overdose ) of St. James Parrish Perique ( ribbon cut ) entered my oven.
Lost ? some 150 gr of liquid/moisture when drying it in room temp for 1 week.
Nothin to do about that , what is more important is how this is going to turn out.
It might turn out to be so good that one don't want to have anything else than this in the future
I handcranked it this time , there was not so much so........
Used 1/2 a Liter of water ( 1 pint + ) and 60 grams of tablesalt (2.11 oz )

Tray used to dry the backer on

3 liter plasticbag to weigh tobacco on a scale

Tobacco turned black as soon as it got the salty water on it....looks a bit wet I know , but I like it wet and can adjust along the way
( Damit , almost used all my salt , hardly had some when I was goin to boil some pasta ) ;)

nice treat , 17.00 is sort of swedish meaning 5 pm......

gettin crowded in there now , this one's gotta fight with 2 of Don's Dark Air Cured batches
handles at over/underheat and 100 C or 212 F

The batch is out in the open after 8 hole days at 212 degrees , won't show any pic 'cause I think would be to go over the top.......
Has smelled just terrific the last few days from the oven ( actually in the hole apartment ).
I'll let it cool off'til tomorrow when it will be treated with some 12-13 grams ( 0.44 oz ) of potash carbonate.
2 weeks rest in the fridge for starters , then we'll see what is has got to offer......
Wonder if it can beat the Mata Fina Filler  which was horrendously good.

PO Green, might just be my computer, but looks awfully like you're using treated wood to press with - copper-chrome arcinate (the green wood preservative treatment any outdoor lumber gets) is not great for you and will likely leech into your backy . . .

Just took what I had available Mad , but as I see it ( been looking at Bobs very easy Perique press ) I have the plug in between backer and that treated wood.
They are not in touch with each other.

No worries what so ever.
Anybody using snus in your beatiful country ?
I'd like to go there and travel around both islands by bike for 6 months or more.
The idea was very close once upon a time , but haven't given it up yet !

I admit to that I opened the batch of that St James Parrish Perique this afternoon and it did smell very very good + enticing and exciting , can' wait to get more than a pinch of this one :) after a meal
But , have to stick to the plan and the plan says 9 th of September to me , that'll be 2 weeks from taken out of the oven.
Should have started to stabilize by then or found its new home in that batch.......

Would this press be suitable to make Perique if one could plug that hole in the bottom and have a different jar inside the press ?

What is that for, making worth from berry fruits ?

It looks really solid and sure it works for pressing Perique. If the metal mesh drum inside is detachable you may change it with a imperforate drum so there may not be necessary to plug that hole. But I think just plugging the hole is more practical, without changing the drum. Do you have another photo e.g. from the top ?

Looks good, nice find. Not to big either. I think smaller would be better if available. Leaf smashes down to nothing.

FmGrowit made a batch of Perique in one of those about 4 years ago. I can't remember what he did with the hole. But I sampled the Perique, and it was excellent.

I can't think of , but one thing. Save the juice and put it in the second next batch off tobaccos. And give it to Me! Mad-(joke) It just gets Me to think of cold rolled steel? After it is done ? Run it thru an old fasion type of ( wash machine type of roller) Then the baccy is ready for Our next Try at perfections. Well? It worked in the past, and They didn't have what We have now? FTT- The Masters of Masters? ? A roller for leaf, for binders and wrappers- that are smooth as a babbies butt? High preasure rollers???? And PO has it to give Use the scoop on the build yet again. Now the juice that is off of that, Add to the water pot in the kiln, or the Cavandish water for infusion? Mad- Call Me on this ?

Looking at the width of the shiny ring around the hole, it may be threaded for regular tapered thread pipe fittings.

You could be very much right there leverhead.
The one I have found is 4 quarts and is a bit different to this , this here has a sort of stainless steel bucket with full of holes in it to take care of the juice.
The 4 quart one is solid inside the press , there is no bucket jar or anything else , just put your tobacco in there and press , downside is that there is also a 3/4 or 1/2 hole for the juice.
But as a former plumber and with great imagnation one must be able to deal with that , I haven't got it yet but I have high hopes of buying one.
4 Quarts is 3,75 Liters and would be just as much to keep me steady for a year.......;)
