My first plants in the ground were well established before my rains started, and some have shot up to 3.5' tall with no problems. New seedlings that survided insect and high heat were subjected to a lot of rain and wind in a well drained area recently. The roots aren't soaked more than 2-3" deep and its just barely damp after that. The faster growing bursa plants are having trouble keeping a strong enough stalk to remain straight and upright, I believe an accelerated growth due to frequent showers. Sometimes everyday or every 2-3 days. Some of them seem to be growing faster than the stalk can support, standing 3' on the first planted. They straighten up but with a good bend in the stalk. The taller the plant the higher up the bend. Most all other varietys were behind the bursa and ottoman and have spread out width wise but just now putting on height. I'm still picking the tiny hornworms in the mornings and now recognizing the single tiny eggs deposited. maybe a dozen total each morning. Not to bad considering last years loopers. I have a second silk leaf blooming that I will bag instead of the first , An even better looking plant than the first but still an early bloomer.

BarG,
better get you some BT just in case you miss those eggs. I have tried that on a couple of hundred plants in the past and they will out "get" you in a hurry :)

I'm planning on hitting the feed store this week, maybe tomorrow, work permitting., my second planting of corn is ready for it also, Thanks for the reminder.

Indianjoe, I'm gonna have to hit you up next year on some potatoe crop pointers. Mine did not produce like they should have this year. I used to get big full size potatoes every year but last, due to drought but this year was dissapointing also for my reds.

good luck on finding it at the feed store,

i must have visited, 15 stores, till i found one that sold what i needed, in the liquid form,

1 had the powder,

if all you find is the powder, i'd suggest going on-line to find the liquid,

i did that last year,
mixed powder with water, and had to buy new parts for my sprayer,
it screwed it up bad,
if it aint concentrate, liquid, i wouldnt suggest mixing it, with water and using it in your sprayer,

They sold a liquid 12 Oz. concentrate BT bottle here last year ,I'll post the name this afternoon. I pour into a hose sprayer with a setting for measuring teaspoons, tablespoons or ozs. per gallon. It shoots out about up to 15' depending on direction of nozzle. Works good for my size grow areas.

Ray, any major retail outlet requires a 45-90 mile road trip so I'm keeping my fingers crossed my local feed store still stocks.

Edit; Thuricide concentrate, $10.00 small town price for 16 ozs. 1 tbls. per gallon for hand sprayer.

I sprayed my tobacco and corn yesterday used about 8 ozs for both. Went out at lunch time and found about 20 hornworm eggs I missed that morning, mostly on the taller bursas. It took longest to roll out a few hoses than it did to spray, that hose canister covers a wide area. I figure about 3-5 dollars a week to keep them in check for now. All my silk leafs are budding now so I've picked the best plant to bag in a couple weeks. 1 should be fine. I can't get over how big the burley, and marlyland 609 leaves get, looks like some kind of giant elephant ears.

It's time to get my hanging areas prepped. All of the BB plants are looking realy fine. I.m looking forward to curing some.

BarG,
when I spray BT, some of the eggs will remain but in a day, dry, dead worms will appear all over the leaves and some of the eggs will turn brownish. Sounds like your yield is getting bigger by the day.

Indianjoe, Its been a great spring for growing even if I did get my own starts in the ground late. None too soon, but all fairly well established. I believe the dog days of summer just arrived, it will be hitting the 100 degree mark for first time next week.

i dont know what type of poision you got,
but once the leaf is sprayed, and dries,

the leaf is poisionous, until the next watering,,and it gets washed off,

i try to give a good watering, that will last 3 days, or after a good rain''

and then spray, so it can sit, and kill everything,,,

i GET VERY AROUSED AT KILLING HORNWORMS'',, it's hard to turn around between the rows,;)

Chicken thats the beauty of a hose attached sprayer. I can adjust for an upward spray to where a garden like mine or your size you just have to thread the hose through a couple of spots to reach everything. It gives a soaking spray like a well aimed sprinkler. I use it for corn the same way.

Thuricide is a concentrated liquid form of BT[Baccilus Thuringeniss] You can adjust the sprayer for amount of BT mixed with water from hose for recomended application. Its only as poisinous as your BT. [For worms and caterpillars] They give up to 7 days for effect.

Them hornworms aint had a chance to get big on my crop, but there were some babys hanging this morning.:D Big smile

It is a lovely thang to walk out 3 days after spraying and not finding a single live worm and very few viable eggs. I think you can tell the difference on how easy or hard they squish. The fresh eggs are a translucent green and hard to squish.

I started picking a few yellow mud lugs yesterday and I am attempting to establish a method to the madness of sorting multiple varietys. I'm using several labeled trays for the six varietys closest to priming, the mud lugs and soon some lugs. havana 41 is budding as well as the silk leaf. I'm taking dons advice and letting the buds develope more before topping,.It may give me a reprieve on suckering. I need to put markers or something to relate the general date for topping to keep track of different varietys. Or a written log.
