Hi all, apologies if this has already been asked I havent seen it anywhere. Im looking at growing Burley next year for cigars. Just wondering what Burley would give a nice medium - full body strength and a moderate - High yield?
Keep in mind that, while burley was regularly used as a cigar wrapper the the US for much of the 20th century, its use as a filler is limited by the fact that burley is significantly more hygroscopic than most cigar-class varieties.
I haven't personally. As Bob pointed out, burley is quite hygroscopic. Whenever I smoke burley-based pipe blends, I have to use an extra pipe cleaner or two to keep the gurgle away. With burley in cigars I imagine I'd end up smoking a wet sponge.
I used to purchase burley-wrapped cigars filled with various Connecticut and Pennsylvania tobaccos (Judges Cave), while they were still produced. I often pay very little attention to the cigar filler mixtures that I roll myself, other than to blend by color and leaf stalk position. Sometimes I blend burley and even Maryland into various Caribbean cigar varieties.
Burley-based pipe blends work well, if you blend it yourself, rather than purchasing humectant-tainted, commercial stuff.
The best burley for rolling cigars is… the one that grows well in your yard. I would suggest buying seeds of several varieties for next year, see what grows best for you, then grow that variety exclusively the following year. Seeds are cheap - time is expensive.
Cheers for the suggestions/inputs guys! Will definitely look at growing burley next year as I like the taste of it when its blended in pipes. I may try roll some cigars with it also
I've been growing Harrow Velvet for the last 2 years and I smoke it straight in a pipe almost exclusively. I've also made excellent cigarillos from it.
I have also made a few cigars from WLT burley ( very strong smoke ) But just what is needed sometimes.
The original and popular commercial strain of burley tobacco makes a great addition to any garden. It is used for its hardiness and smooth, rich flavor. Good for cigarette making. This variety grows fast and is a high yielding plant.
My whole crop this year was yellow twist bud, so I'm hoping I can get a mix going of the different leaves to something that will be tasty in a pipe, and also a few puro cigar's. Although I am tempted to buy some Latakia and mix some in to add some depth
