Hey all.

im working my way towards my first batch of home grown tobacco.
i was wondering weather i should case the cured leaf before putting them in the jar to age? or i should case it after the tobacco mellowed.
im growing this tobacco for RYO cigarettes.

also, ive read here that glycerin should be between 1/20 - 1/40 part, what is the purpose of choosing an higher percentage of glycerin? it will make it more moist?

thank you.

If you are using a shredder, add casing 'after' the shredding or you will gum up the blades.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but this year will be my first year using my harvest as pipe tobacco. Once flue cured, how long should one age (minimum) before it's noticeably tastier?

Ill share a little of my trial and error that might help. When I roll a new cigar blend, I only roll 2-4 cigars. That way if the results are less than ideal I didn't waste much if any tobacco. Being newer to this hobby might I suggest casing in small batches to figure out what works for you. With pipe tobacco I keep shredded leaf in low case (no PG or Glycerin) in glass canning jars as kind of piggy banks then take out what I need for a specific blend Im working on. Once I have a recipe that's repeatable I will scale up in quantities. Hope that helps.

I would say that the first few weeks of rest (not really aging) makes a noticeable difference with flue-cured tobacco. Properly flue-cured tobacco does not "age" further, in the usual sense of the word, since the aging enzymes have been destroyed by the flue-cure process.
