Maybe this was spoken about but I can't find anything on here in the search function about it.

Has anyone experimented with using the juice from perique to case Virginia's with? I have heard some manufacturers do this. I know its rumored that Dunhills Royal Yacht was but I'm unaware if this info is true.

If you have then what was your results?

I am going to try this later today.

First I will soak some perique in room temp water and press out any remaining kiquid from the leaves. Water will be room temp to make sure that any viable yeast aren't killed off and may be transferred to the virginia in hopes that I may get some acetic fermentation out of it.

I am planning on several tests:

1. Thin leaf virginia cased only wiith perique liquid.
Red virginia only cased with perique liquid.
2. Same tobaccos as test 1 but with a mixture of citric acid flue cure casing and perique liquid.
3. Same as test 2 but with the addition of brewer's best plum flavoring to the casing t9 attempt something similar to 4Aces RedQueen plugs.

I am also aware that citric acid will inhibit yeast growth so I don't expect any potential fermentation from tests 2 and 3. I will update when I have some results.

I have a VA plug from 5/5/2025 that was cased with some turbinado invert and perique juice. The juice was from a rum soak. I was planning on giving it some years but six months is right for a cut and double press. I could pinch off a bowl if I did this. The rum soak was an Aleister Crowley inspired experiment where the rum was sieved off for a milder perique that could be smoked on its own. This was a success and I have washed other strong tobaccos as well. A PA washed with water yielded a similar result in that the tobacco has strong woody notes in its smoke.

The John Cottons double pressed series gave me the idea. Basically a six month pressing that is aired and repressed for another six months. What I have been doing is pressing with a noodle press then fitting it snugly into a jelly jar to hold the press. After six months I will open and cut, rub, and air, then repress for another six months. This will then be rubbed out and aired then half pressed into a larger jar for accessing.
p.s. I pulled off a bowls worth to test.

The results are a sweeter VA/PER with no influence from the burning of the perique base leaf (Red Burley). This is a great idea!

That is awesome to hear, that is the goal that I had in mind. I am pretty partial to red virginia but I figured I'd include the thin leaf to test the perique liquid's acid neutralizing ability. To my palette the thin leaf virginia is slightly more acidic than lemon but it could just be me.

If I get good results I may try casing some turkish with the perique liquid for some new flavors as I find the oriental/perique combo can produce some really interesting wine-like flavor and body sometimes.

An ulu or chaveta makes cutting the tobacco plugs very easy work. I have an ulu; its also the best knife I've ever used for cutting meat, slicing sashimi, and butchering animals. There's a lot of different shapes and sizes of ulus but the most basic one is the best imo: https://theulufactory.com/product/inupiat-classics/

I use an Arcos brand chef's knife and it works amazingly well, I am able to get thin flakes relatively easily of I make a 25g plug in the noodle press.
