Ever think of just mixing your own soil mix? Im sure someone of your redneck skills would be able to get your hands on a cement mixer? haha

I've just started alot of herbs in a wicked simple mix.
Pro-Mix Peat Moss
Perlite (extra)
Then once they get alittle girth on em ill drench the soil with some biotonical teas. Worked wonders before with some other plants so I figured it couldnt hurt.

[quote by chicken]I GOT ALL THE CHICKEN POOP TILLED IN THE GARDEN YESTERDAY,,, moved a ton of manure with a wheel-barrel,,,and right now my whole body aches,,,,[quote

I dont own a wheel barrow and never want to own another one unless it comes with an automatic wheel barrow pusher..ha ha. I've got a 15 yd truckload of mushroom mulch coming soon to spread and til on three seperate large gardens and around the house beds. I also have a realy nice neighbor with a brand new4 wheel drive john deer tractor to help spread. I'm also getting about 9 yds. of top soil to help build up small sections that are low lying or not as productive due to higher clay content and gets to hardpacked. Also having my local fertilizer supplier to verify chloride content , I may not need much fertilizer after I get everything disked and tilled in , .

Whoa, some real nice looking seedlings you have, almost ready to transplant some. Also, the cover you're using will help keep down the weeds real good. I usually use it, but got so busy with work last year didn't get it down in time...big mistake. Thought I could keep up, and did OK up keeping the weeds chopped down until June 22nd, that's when we got the big winds that knocked down so many of my big trees. Then it was chain saw time the rest of the summer. Still got a decent harvest, from about 10 times the size of your plot.

If you use mushroom compost you can put it 5" deep on top of the row cover and let it start breaking down. I used leaves in past years and that helps keep the row cover held down real good after they get rained on a few times.

about the mushroom compost...i was trying to find out if it was ok to put mushrooms in my compost bin and wound up reading about mushroom compost (used up compost that was used to grow mushrooms) i kept finding pages saying it wasnt all its cracked up to be. i believe it was along the lines that the nutrients have almost all been used up (with the 3 crops of shrooms they grew out of it).

Mushroom compost still has a lot of nutrients after it is no longer useful to grow mushrooms. But, it needs to compost before adding INTO the soil. You can use it as a mulch to supress weeds, then it start composting over the season and can be worked into the dirt during the fall or spring. Adds organic materials, but needs some ag lime. Not the best thing available but it is cheaper than dirt!!! Be sure to do a soil analysis.

I certainly know that feeling chicken. It's an 80 mile round trip to buy more than the basics around here. I've used that 6ml. plastic for a temporary wrap on my stable I built till I could buy the tin. It works great for a wind block and heat. I'd give 6 month max in uv before it breaks down. You won't need it but a few weeks.

yeah weeds...i am not looking forward to hand turning my garden, (it sits over my gas line) so dont think i can rototill. not much other choice in the city. it used to be lawn, and now some of the grass and roots gets so long and hard to separate from the soil (and weeds), that i didnt even bother planting veggies last year. i like the cloth or newspaper idea to keep weeds at bay. i saw somewhere in here that you have to plow as deep as possible. so my question is how much room does a baccy plant need for the rootball?

leftyrighty, i may be wrong, but i think the sour smell under the cloth might actually be good. weeds (and their seeds) rotting to death and providing nutrients for what you really want in there?

the more room you provide that root ball, the better. get the heat up on those weeds. if they ferment enough, they will have a hard time germinating. I intend on using a raised bed for my crop, but i'm also going to run a post hole auger in each spot i intend to put a plant about 2 feet deep. i want good drainage and to encourage huge root balls

Chicken,

Is your Lizard tail's full name "Lizard tail/Turtle foot"? I found some of these seeds today and there are only 50 seeds or so. If you're going the same thing,I'm not going to plant these.
