Thanks Bob, any thoughts on the "leaf tearing"? is my presumption about the combonation of too much water and the fast growth the correct cause?

I can't say anything about that particular tear, but most of the tearing I see on my tobacco is caused either by gusting wind or by birds removing an insect from the surface--mostly the latter.

Yesterday's wilt cycle was vicious on the flowerbed patch. Poor little va golds nearly melted into the ground. If I wasnt expecting it I would have thought the whole patch was going to die.

and this morning the whole patch looks like they have never wilted at all. ready to take on another day of sunshine.

a dozen or so of my "leggy" starts have started looking like this.........tipped over and showing a strong ground sucker. Going to clip them off and let the sucker become the main stem instead of waiting for them to break or be damaged.



Can I hang the cut off stems, let them dry, and have a little smokeable tobacco or is it a waste of time to try?


found this cluster of eggs. don't think they are hornworm, as they were on the top of the leaf not the bottom? Doesnt matter, squished them anyway.


14ft "airial" view of the garden patch from the back deck. Getting along fairly well considering the drowning. Soil still is not drying well with the daily rain. Biggest loss was the Yayladang. of a row of 12 only had a couple survive so moved them to the hill patch to fill in dead spots and replaced the entire row with Izmir, which are doing well. The Yayl was an unexpected gift not a planned variety so I will be happy with just enough to sample and collect seed this year.

Hey bama you can pull the sucker and cover the crooked plant up to the leaves with dirt. New roots will grow and give you a real healthy plant.

Thought about that. My thought was the main stem is probable overstressed at this point so will probably bolt to flower early. Maybe I will mark those plants and try a few each way and see which do better.

It may go either way. I love a healthier root ball, good roots = good plant. That's what is wrong with mine this year, too much water. I think all mine will be stunted. That's why the re-grow, hoping for the rain to stop with a new crop ready for the ground.

Yup. Tired of rain. I have standing water in my patch this morning. Normally it drains well.

Small milestone reached for a first time grower.......I now have a couple plants with leaves over 12" long.

Think of this season as a learning experience. Last year, my first year, I made so many mistakes. Looking back, what the weather did to me was minor.

It has been a crappy year, and I ant had all the rain dumped on me Next year will be better an you will know a lot about crappy condishions.And we still got a chance at a fall crop.

It rained all day here today. Nice slow steady spring type rain. If I was growing anything other than already drowned tobacco it would have been wonderful. Tomorrow could get rough though.

The forecast of a couple days ago has changed for the better. Up to 4" of rain is now up to 1" with locally heavier p possible. I am hoping for the best. And a couple 12" leaves at only 2.5 weeks planted in the ground has me optimistic despite the weather.
