Nice quick and ingenious, love it mate.
I didn't get any strange flavors out of mine, cept maybe a bit of rot, my bad.
I did paint mine real well as it is bean style poly and it soaks up water.
Lookin at yours it seems to be the water proof foam though, maybe it dont need painted?
Used standard water based acrylic paint to good effect.
For better control I added a thermostat from an old oven, attaching the probe to the crock
got things a lot easier to control.

Thanks webby. The oven thermostat is a good idea. I like the thought of a knob to turn instead of a set screw. The foam board is exterior rated closed cell and all seams are sealed with aluminum tape. How did you vent yours?

Got a circulation fan installed this evening. Stolen from a broken computer. Hopefully will keep temps more even within the kiln. Also sealed the door better. The crock struggles with 125_130 deg. May have to add a small ceramic heater to get true flue cure temps.

The silver river leaves salvaged this morning are taking a nice gold/orange color.

I vented through the roof with an 1 1/4" hole and wished i hadn't, so I have sealed it. How ever I did have a play with venting at different hights.
One side of my door does not seal so well so I use that as my vent and adjust the humidity by sealing the crack at different heights with a strip of
wood and an old sock.
The height and humidity thing seem to work.
If you attach that comp fan to a peice of pipe you can take the hot humid air from top to bottom. Johnylees build has one and I think theres fotos
in my build too.

Interesting idea using the fan as a "puller". I set mine at the bottom pushing up to try and force "convection".

i need to get a pic. of my venting system.. i didnt intend for it to work that way,, but for what im doing i cant beat it,

i like the way i step into the camper, and it warm and muggy in there, from the venting,

then i open the door, and a wave of heat hits me,

and then the smell enters, my nose, and i know some good smoke is right around the corner,

Right now the crockpot does heat and humidity. For higher temp I will add a 500w ceramic heater.

A little leafy smell from the kiln this morning......guess that means I am on the way. Can't wait for it to change to a good smell.

I bet it's all a good smell at this point. Good job on the kiln. If you need to make room in the kiln sooner, I've been having great results with drying the midrib inside the house in bud bags. The leaves color cure fine, but with the high humidity, the leaves and ribs were just not drying at all. Afraid of mold, I put them in bud bags and brought them in the house for drying. Worked great. No problems. 73F and 53% RH inside the house. It's been staying in the upper 70% RH range (real close to 80 at night) in the shop. The fan has helped prevent mold, but did nothing toward drying.

Thanks Knucks. Just got home and the "fresh grassy smell" from this morning is much less notable.......milder and changing a little. Putting a view window on the door and sealing it better tonight. Also working on a ceramic heat element for dry heat when needed.

With the door open to install my view window I noticed the hayfield smell gone from this silver river. I am an impatient result oriented type person so guess what I had to do........

It had a week air dry/color before the hotbox. Just threw it in for self defense when it showed mold on some leaves.

Not a daily smoke by any means but smooth and mild with a good "cigarish"flavor. Not at all grassy or harsh. If kilning brings out even a bit of sweetness it could be a favorite in a hurry.

For Chicken.......I see why you ran out of last years silver river before the new growing season even began.

New door seal installed last night working a littltoo well.......woke up to 95% humidity in the box this morning. Time for a vent and dry heat source.
