I'm going to start a second grow this year, taking into account the latest suggestions from Knucklehead and Deluxestogie.
I've been experimenting with a white bedsheet, and I'm pretty sure that the combination of a large, white painted panel and a kiddie pool that's movable will get a lot more sunlight to the plants.
I've just ordered KY17 Burley and Spectrum Bright Leaf from Northwood Seeds which should get here in 7-10 days. (Thanks for the links earlier in this thread.)
Germinating, thinning and growing the seedlings went well in the first attempt this year, my problems started once they were transplanted into bags. I used 1 gallon polythene bags sitting on a tiled floor. This time I will use 3 gallon non woven bags in a kiddie pool.
I also made a massive mistake with the growing medium. I just guessed what to use. Clay soil from a friend's garden, cheapest potting soil and drainage sand, equal quantities in the mix. The clay is causing so many problems. It's very easy to get either, water-logged or dried into a solid brick. The polythene sacks don't help. New root growth is virtually non existent. For this second grow I’m thinking of a good quality soilless potting mix and rabbit poop compost.
I have a never ending supply of rabbit hutch litter and have started a compost bin. Poop, compressed sawdust pellets (mostly urine soaked that turn into wet sawdust) and a mixture of wet and dry hay. I’m adding some vegetable peelings and tea bags as well. Is hay that's damp with urine classed as carbon or nitrogen for compost? I also have a never ending source of used coffee grounds, but not too sure about using them.
This first grow, the growing medium pH is high at about 7-7.5. I think this is mainly down to the clay. I’m hoping that the medium I’m thinking of using for this second grow will take care of that problem.
The chlorine level in the tap water here isn't high, but to be on the safe side I'll leave it in buckets for 48 hours before using it.
As usual, any advice, tips, etc. very much appreciated.

The hay will count for Carbon and the Urine for Nitrogen. Used coffee grounds won't affect your pH much (fresh unbrewed grounds will acidify) and is a Carbon source. Veg and fruit peelings / cast offs are magic in your compost, along with crushed egg shells. Give it a year and you'll have "black gold" for your garden.

Back to my first (miserable) Burley grow. A few plants have got to 40 inches high with the biggest leaves about 11 inches long by 7 inches wide, 16 or 17 leaves per plant. They now appear stuck in time. Don't grow any taller, leaves don't appear to get any bigger. Will these plants flower or are they just too weak? Not sure what to do next. Should I top them and hope to get a bit of leaf growth? Is it okay to top them before the flower buds appear? Will they ever ripen?
I do have 10 Virginia plants that seem to be doing okay, so I'm not suicidal yet.
My wife says that she doesn't inform me in detail about the ingredients in a meal she has cooked. So why on earth do I think she'd be interested in the ingredients in my new compost bin?

Compost bin? Awesome. What are you putting in it? Photos? This is my first year with a bin. Mine didn't really take off until I added some old potting soil to it. I guess the needed microbes were in the dirt.

Photos, photos, photos.
Looks like new leaves are coming through at the top of the plant, but they've been stuck like that for a week. Just don't get any bigger.

If your seasonal weather is not a limiting factor on when you must harvest, you can simply wait for those tiny top leaves to grow. Topping will speed up the maturation of the remaining leaf.

The white-mottled leaf is abnormal—either environmental issues or a pathogen. I can't tell the difference. The number of variables that may be affecting the plants are so numerous (lighting issues, soil issues, potting issues, local weather, etc.) that you will likely just have to go by trial and error, to determine what works best for you.

Well, at least I know what the white/yellow mottled leaf problem is now. I've methodically sprayed every leaf of every plant, top side and underside with a soap and water mixture. According to pretty much everything I've read, I should repeat this at least 3 times at 2 or 3 day intervals. I should also cut off the leaves that are pretty much white/yellow overall. For some reason the whitefly attacked the Burley in preference to the Virginia, no idea why.

If you wanted to, I've heard rabbit droppings are mild enough to topdress with, without composting.

I've done two soap and water treatments of all the plants. Due to do another one on Sunday. I don't think I'll ever completely get rid of the whitefly all the time I have plants on the terrace. For my second grow I want to have the terrace white fly free, so this is what I'm thinking of doing.
Top all plants and see what happens over the next 4-6 weeks with hopefully leaves maturing. I have about 100 leaves that I think could be okay as long as I can keep the whitefly at bay. If I can get the plants harvested and moved off the terrace I should have a couple of weeks to disinfect the terrace so as to be able to get the second grow outside without any worries.

Now, questions..... Does this sound like a reasonable thing to do, given that the plants aren't exactly healthy due to all the previous problems. (bad soil etc).
After topping, do the leaves increase in size?
Should leaves that have been pretty much ruined by the whitefly be cut off (see photo).
