My name is AKA, writing to you from Georgia (the country in the Caucasus region). I’ve been diving deep into the world of natural leaf processing, and my goal is to craft a high-quality, signature hand-rolling (RYO) tobacco blend here locally using imported whole leaves.
My current setup involves working with Whole Leaf Virginia strains, stripping the midribs, applying custom casings, and carefully managing moisture levels throughout the process. However, to scale up from a personal passion to a refined micro-production process, I want to make sure I am following best practice procedures at every step.
I am planning a complete workflow: importing top-grade leaf, developing a balanced blend, formulating optimal casing solutions, introducing suble flavoring, proper conditioning, shredding, and aging.
For the experienced blenders, small-scale producers, and boutique processors here on the forum, I would deeply appreciate your insights on a few key areas:
1. Processing & Casing Order: What is your preferred sequence when transitioning from raw leaf to finished RYO product (e.g., casing before stripping vs. after shredding, heat-sweating/fermenting timing)?
2. Moisture & Curing Dynamics: What target moisture percentages do you recommend during shredding versus final packaging to balance elasticity and shelf stability?
3. Flavor Retention: Any advice on fixatives or natural humectants that perform best for hand-rolling tobacco without overpowering the natural leaf profile?
4. Micro-Scale Equipment: Recommendations on reliable, medium-duty equipment for consistent shredding and casing application for small batch runs.
