"Officials said the molten rock from the crater is now flowing down a so-called lava tube beneath earlier, hardened lava, straight into the sea. That has eased fears it could spread wider and cause more destruction.
The German Research Center for Geosciences, which sent a team to La Palma, said the lava flow is 6,300 meters (6,900 yards) long, more than 1,000 meters (1,100 yards) wide at its broadest point, and up to 25 meters (82 feet) thick."

Like volcanoes a lot. I travel to a lot of places to check out volcanoes and hunt the agates, jaspers and geodes that have formed. Glad that this one hasn't killed or injured people like the big ones in Guatemala have done lately. Side benefit is that they form lots of hot springs and you can toast marshmallows. In Antigua in Guatemala you can sit on the roof of the brewpub and watch Volcan Pacaya and see other peaks from same table. Fuego is the latest deadly one down there. Couple years back killed 200 people and a couple hundred are missing.
Java has awesome ones as well. Waiting on a mountain that you climbed in the dark to watch the sun come up on a volcano field in Mt Bromo.. pretty awesome stuff. Can even rent horses there and get right up on the craters. Eazy peazy..
Love geology..

"Streams of lava have laid waste to more than 742 hectares (1833 acres) of land and destroyed almost 2,000 buildings on La Palma since the volcano started erupting on Sept. 19.
About 7,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on the island, which has about 83,000 inhabitants"

Today.

Spain on Monday ordered more than 30,000 people to remain indoors on La Palma island because of toxic gases from a volcano that has been erupting for months. After several days of low-level activity, the Cumbre Viejo suddenly sprang to life on Sunday with several explosions sending a vast cloud of ash and smoke into the sky.

The regional government of Spain's Canary Islands, which lie off Africa's northwest coast, ordered residents of three municipalities to lockdown owing to high levels of sulfur dioxide in the air.

The three municipalities are home to roughly 33,000 people, or 38% of the population of the island, according to national statistics institute INE.

"Close the doors, windows, shutters and prevent any air coming in from the outside," the regional government said in a statement. "Confine yourself, if possible, in the rooms located furthest inside."

La Palma volcano update: Volcano remains calm, but small quakes continue
Fri, 17 Dec 2021, 16:45
"For 3 days, no eruptive activity has taken place, and the likelihood that the eruption is actually over is clearly increasing. The cone only shows mild degassing and no lava flows are active any more.
Official confirmation when the eruption is declared over will likely need to wait a little longer. Some doubt remains as to the significance of the continuing earthquake activity..."
