Fresh wood chips will eat up Nitrogen if you till them in but will make good mulch that you can till in in the fall.
Right on Boboro, You could till them in an area for next years planting. I'm preparing a couple areas for next year by spreading a thick layer of Horse poop and bedding material that will be tilled in for next year about four inchs thick, + making a a new large pile for composting.

Happy Birthday Maks. Beautiful countryside.

I'm happy, thanks.

I will use them as a mulch in some areas where is to hot and not so much water to prevent evaporation. Also will not till them in in the fall, but will be just covering my soil for the winter. They will break slowly over time. I saw it on back to eden garden movie.

I have the similar idea.

Today stopped raining after a week or so. It's still cold at night down to 6C (43F). Day time up to 20C (68F). I believe frost days are over. My garden is ready to put some plants in the soil. I'm planing on 16th of May to put first tobaccos in the ground.
Hope the rain is not going to ruin my plans.

Today I was on the same spot after a month. Weather here is far from as it should be for the end of may. I can not wait longer. I put in soil 55 plants in that location.
I still have some backup in case if here something will go wrong.

6x Prilep (66-9/7)
12x Xanthi Yaka
12x Harrow Velvet
10x Pennsylvania Red
15x Virginia Bright

14th of May I planted first tobacco. That was Bosnian Burley (seeds from 2009). 39 plants.

Today I went to see those plants and I took this pictures:

My Burley is almost mature. I will start to cut bottom leaves. That's not funny. After two weeks. Same size. Different color.
About the wether I can not say is bad because everything is good for something, but definitely not for tobacco. Night time is sometimes down to 6 Celsius. A lot of rain, cold and windy.

Hey max does Bosnian Burley have a stronger nicotine hit than say Virginia gold? In the movies they always show European cigarettes are stronger than US cigarettes

I have Virginia and Burley from Don and both are much stronger than mine Burley last year. Maybe it's because of the wether here, little less sun or the way I grow it last year with all those suckers and blossoms. I don't know. I hope I could answer you in the end of this season.

My weather is 90*F 85%RH day time 75*F 80% RH night time. Perfect tobacco growing weather. The days will be getting to 95-99*F soon and it'll be harder on the bacca but it will keep on growing.

Maks,
Your burley appears to be a white stem burley. They tend to be much more yellow than other varieties, even when tiny. I would leave them alone, and allow them to grow more.

I have 20 varieties in the ground. Only my Harrow Velvet (a white stem burley) appears yellow, with a white stalk. That's normal.

After transplanting, it took my plants a couple of weeks to start showing any sign of growth, it may be they were stretching their roots and not growing much up top. They have finally begun to start putting on some new leaves. I buried my plants deep like yours, and the bottom leaves that either contact the soil or had part of their stem buried turned yellow also. I left them on the plant because they seemed to be the ones that attracted the most insects. When they get really bad and almost dead, I'll pinch them off. Just give them time. All the new growth, and the leaves not contacting the soil are nice and green.

Max,
I over limed I think in my grow bags and plants stayed a lot more yellow than the rest I didn't double the lime on. I added vinager water to them and they greened up pretty fast. The alkilinity causes them to not take up the nutrients. If you have a way to check soil ph that is reliable might show over liming?????
The yellow leaves on the bottom are somewhat similar to pics of nitrogen deficiency but I wouldnt think that at this early stage. Also they are young and the lower leaf could have just reached its usefull prime :)

Bob

Last year I have the same seeds and it looked very green. I have some of those leaves in my hand on my avatar picture. You can see only green leaves.

I wish my garden looked so good!

You make my day. I feel much better now.

Maks - I just fertilized my tobacco today. I will let you know in a couple days if it is helping the yellowing. I had to wet the ground before I put down the slug pellets according to the instructions, so I fertilized, irrigated and put down the slug pellets. I had found a couple of slugs on my plants, so part of the insect damage was from the slugs. 70% chance of rain for Saturday, so after the rain I will spray again with BT to kill any worms. Did you fertilize the patch before you planted, or since?

I fertilize my patch four weeks before I put plants in the soil. Only with cow manure composted more than two years. It was actually black soil. And I didn't over fertilize. Less is more I believe. I didn't put anything else in the soil since than. For one month we have only rain and rain and rain and rain and cold. I forget how the sun looks like. I believe all the europe wether is same this year, but I also believe that after the rain sun rises.:)
